M3 purchase

I currently own a 2001 740il. My daughter is about to inherit it. I was wanting to get an m3 as my next bmw, but I dont know anything about the m series. I want to get a used one with average miles. Can anyone tell me if there are any options to steer clear of, or any year models that are prone to problems. Any help would be greatly apprfeciated.

Best advice is go over to m3forum.net, especially if you are looking for an E46 (2001-2006).

If you are looking for a newer M3, then m3post.com is likely your best bet.

I hear the E30 M3 and 46 M3 are both very good models.
But then I am bias to the E30 M3.

Depending on your budget, I would consider an E9X model ///M3 if you have your heart set on a M3.

However, if you can tolerate it (space limitations) I would tell you to check out the ///M Z4 coupe/ roadsters. These cars are just the truest form of ///M's. The visceral speed, feel, drive is unbelievable and unrivaled. In other words very unique IMO.

I too am partial.

I have a 2006 M3 and love it. My friend who has a 2003 325 drove my car and said there is no comparison. Some people want the newer V8 which makes the straight six a bargain. While I don't think you can go wrong either way, I would look for the six cylinder E46.

The E46 M3 is still a beast, and a true M as any M.

One of the major debates you will find is SMG vs. Non-SMG (standard 6 speed). Beware that the SMG was a bit more failure prone and extremely expensive to replace. It is love or hate though, some love it some hate it. Both are very comparable in performance (the SMG is not able to be launched as hard, but shifts quicker).

Mine is a Non-SMG 6spd.
