How to remove side mirrors?

I just attempted to change my side mirrors on my car with the Euro ones.

I've done this on 2 e46s by following this DIY:
http://www.unitedbimmer.com/forums/b...ror-glass.html

on my x3, I did not have much luck, the mirror flew off and ripped the ribbon.

How bad is the damage? And how hard is it to fix? And, umm, what is the proper way to take off the mirrors?

Some more pics... Comparing the OEM USA mirror to the OEM Euro mirror. The appears to be an inner ring on the US mirror, that might slide into the Euro one...

What are the benefits of the EU mirror over the US one?

I still wonder why, if the european mirrors are so much better, we are not allowed by DOT to have them on our cars from the get go? There has to be some actual reason, not just some fat cat bureaucrat's whim. Anyone know why?

Take a closer look at our elected officials and re-evaluate that statement.

Well, there is that of course! The problem is that the elected officials leave the regulation stuff to the unelected appointed political hacks who rule our everyday lives according to their personal agenda (witness the dreaded CARB in our state).

Here is a schematic of the exterior door mirror. It may get you started with the right replacement parts. Appears the mirror "cap" and "frame" snap together to enclose the mirror workings inside after removing the cap (Number 4) from the bottom.

Ribbon looks like it is part of the actuator assembly for models with key memory.

thanks...

And looking at this picture from the e46 install:

looks like the inner ring was supposed to stay on the main assembly unit, not the glass itself... Car is being dropped off at BMW tomorrow, will update when I hear back from them...

You might need to replace the mirror assembly.
