Trunk issue/happy resolution

More often than not I've found the service on high-end German cars to be sub-par, at least with the dealers in my area. Most of the time I know more about the vehicles (from forums like these) than the dealer does. However, I was pleasantly surprised by my latest experience with my dealer - Ira BMW of Stratham, NH (I think they are owned by Group 1 Automotive).

The automatic trunk feature on my car stopped working on a Friday evening. I took my car by the dealer the next day to have it checked (hoping it was something minor). Although they were quite busy, my service advisor took the car right in. An hour later they told me the motor was bad so parts would need to be ordered and replaced. Unfortunately, there were no replacement parts in the U.S. or Germany, but being a Saturday, they couldn't confirm until Monday.

Since we're all savvy car-guys on this forum, I know what you're thinking. However, before I could suggest "pulling a part from one of the 750s sitting on the lot", my advisor suggested this to me as an option if no were parts available. As it turns out, this was the only option. One more visit to the dealer, a brand new loaner X3, and in a few hours my car was fixed (and they did a proper job washing it)! While I'm not happy that the trunk failed after 3,500 miles, things do happen. Now, such service may seem common place to some of you guys, but not in these parts!

Glad you're back on the road esk!

They pulled a good part off a new vehicle? I doubt that is a BMW supported option. I'd be annoyed to find out a factory installed part off my car was taken for someone else and replaced...

I'm impressed--they went the extra mile for you. I wouldn't care if they changed out parts, it's all covered under warranty and it's made by the same manufacturer. JMO.

First off, there were no parts available in the US OR GERMANY. It wasn't like I didn't want to wait a day or two for the part to be delivered. Secondly, why would BMW care? As BMR2009 said it will be replaced with an OEM part and no one will ever no. For all I know a defective part may have been replaced on my car in Germany or during the PDI at the vehicle center. I'd be more pissed if my bumper was repainted because it was damaged in shipping which happens quite often.

It seems to me the goal of BMW and my dealer is to keep their customers happy even if that involves removing a part from a similar in stock model. I've been inundated with surveys from BMW and my dealer asking me about my car and my experience. My response would certainly be a heck of a lot different if my car was laid up for weeks and I was stuck driving a 3 series loaner while several 750s sat on the dealer's lot.
