Slainte. My 2003 525i spontaneously went into failsafe mode and stayed in one gear. It ended up being a low/dead battery . That was the only indication that I got that anything was wrong. No battery light came on or any other warning that I noticed. As I was driving to my destination, other things started shutting down, heater, radio, etc.. I got to where I was going, parked and shut the car off. It would not restart, dead battery. No surprise. Had it towed, and it needed a new alternator and battery. No problems since. I don't know why there was no battery light, or other symptoms of a low battery. That was about a year ago, and the car had about 96k and it was only the 2nd battery. Good luck.
