What do you think about timing chain rails/guides/tensioners? The engine has ZERO chain noise now. Once I got the belt tensioner cylinder replaced it's quiet as a sewing machine. I'd change/replace the cam chain guide etc., but I'm afraid to mess with a good thing. Besides, I'm on a "bread and water" budget. If I don't need something, it get's checked off the list.

Opinions?

Are you planning on having the head checked/planed? You might be able to get away with just checking the head. After 1/4 million miles, its possible the HG just failed, and the head is not warped and not needing machining.

I have access to check it myself (the machine shop where I worked for 27 years). Surface plate, digital surface reader, refractometer, etc. If it's warped I'll go from there. We didn't do automotive machine work, but I have connections to a shop that does BMW machine work. I pray it won't need it, because even with my discount it's danged expensive.

I'm pretty sure it's just a failed gasket and not warpage. It's never had the head off, and the PO wasn't too particular about yearly coolant system flushes.

Pipe is out....it was in terrible shape. The fitting going to the expansion tank snapped off when I tried to remove the hose. This could have been much worse. It was a disaster looking for a place to happen.

Now, why would anyone claim BMW plastic to be inferior and brittle?

you know, there has *got* to be a way to get these made in metal. have a few tool and die companies around, and am taking my m42 apart, so maybe i will drop in and see what they would charge for a run. it can;t hurt, right??


i mean, between the ti forum, this forum, and the others, there's got to be a demand for this to be made a little bit better and last longer than the brittle plastic parts.

It could be cast pretty simply in aluminum. Hardest part would be machining the 90 angled part that goes in the block, since it's a critical sealing surface, but with a CNC mill, it would be cake.

Some free advice: Don't start adjusting an E24 door the night before a rally. 5.5 hours later it's finally back together, and, yes, it closes better, but it went downhill for 5 of those hours.

As long as that's just oil, you're good dude. Just needs new spark plug well gaskets. Cheap and easy to do.

Today in my bmw i was doing some plowing... then i lost all my power steering, broke my drivers side fender, and my engine bay is now full of snow... stuff is smoking and im hoping its just the snow..... whoops

Apex Race Parts...

75 mm studs. So far I like them. They feel hard as fcuk so I'm not worried they're shear off or anything like the cheap Chinese studs.

But then again I've only lightly driven my car around the block to test them and haven't actually TESTED them.

Being "modded" has noting to do with leaking valve cover and/or plug well gaskets. They leak with age due to drying up and cracking. Just order a valve cover gasket kit with the retainer nut seals as well. It's cheap and easy to do.
