Looking at 2010 X3

I am looking at getting a 2010 X3. It looks like a great Small SUV but I like to know the good and bad before I buy one. Can you all let me know what I should look out for and what I can expect once I start driving the car. It will be my DD and my commute is about 50 miles round trip mostly highway and medium about of traffic.

I'm very happy with my 2009 and would buy another in a heartbeat.

I have the manual tranny (which I highly recommend) so I don't have any of the automatic problems others are having.

You might want to test drive the X3 on your 50Miles commute and see if you like the ride, some members doesn't like the X3 firm/harsh suspension, some do, like me

You want MT or AT? If you want AT, i'd look at a Audi Q5 instead. The Auto tranny problem would be enough for me not to get a '07+

+1 on the above post. Take a look at the Q5, XC60, and EX35 before you take the X3 plunge. There are great choices out there now. The X3 has a horrible ride on any kind of rough pavement, and the transmission is (still) iffy on the A/T versions IMHO. If you absolutely have to get one then an M/T is your best bet.

I had an AT 07 x3 and had to get rid of it because the tranny was so dangerous. However, there were so many other factors (handling, speed, functionality, etc....) that I got an 08 MT as a replacement.

If you are not into hard cornering and a lead foot then the Q5 would be on my list as well.

I second the test drive statement. Make sure it feels good for your drive/roads.

As far as the trans, if you need an AT test drive it and use your own judgement. Many find it drives fine. If you don't like its shifting performance, go to another manufacturer. I am not sure about Audi myself. If I did not love my 2007 X3 with AT as much as I do, I would probably go back to Lexus where I never had an issue for over 200,000 miles. If my X3 does not work trouble-free for years, back to the Japanese companies for me.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

The Good -- it is the last year of a pretty long production run which should mean the bugs are worked out. The vehicle is consistently ranked as one of the most reliable suv's of all German SUV's. It is a pisser to drive -- handles like a BMW ---It is available with a manny tranny. Very few suv's are and even fewer will be as the years go by. If you ever drove a MT car it is worth a look: very light precise and fun.

The Bad -- h/o AT glitches, ride issues.

The current X3 is due to be replaced with a newer, improved model sometime this year. The current X3 is likely to take a hit in depreciation when the new model comes out. On the other hand, the new model (production is being shifted from Austria to South Carolina) may have some teething problems in its first year of production. If I were you and had my heart set on an X3, I would be tempted to wait for the new model, but that is just me.

If you are not in a rush I would wait until next year and see what the new production looks like. If reviewers blast it as inept....BELIEVE THEM.

If reviewers like it as far superior to the current model then it may be worth looking at.

I'd also suggest either waiting for the new one (if it doesn't have major issues) or looking around. For 2010 the X3 is just too long in the tooth, and you spend so much to get it optioned up to what's often standard these days--and even if you do it you'll be stuck with antiquated navigation and mediocre sound. If you have to have an X3 save 20-30k and get a great deal on an '07-'09 with low miles... because it's the exact same car with almost the same resale value once you've driven it off the lot!

If I *had* to replace mine right now I'd be considering the Cadillac SRX (I know, GM--ack, I felt that way too before I sat in one--you'll be surprised how closely they seem to have copied the X3 and there's a turbo version soon), the Q5, the XC60, and maybe the X5d.
