Newb Question bought 09 X3 Sports Package

Hello Bimmerfest board. I am a newb that just bought a used 09 X3 with Sport package and 19 inch rims. Overall this is a great little SUV. My one question is this. The ride is a little rough. I know they are low profile tires but this is quite uncomfortable. My question is : Do 18 or 17 inch rims and tires make a big difference, or is it the sports package suspension? Or is it the Pirelli tires? Thanks in advance .

Change in tires may help. 17" are a bit more forgiving, but will only reduce it.

Dropping to 17" wheels with more forgiving tires will definitely help. But a lot of the stiffness is due to your suspension via the Sport Package. A lot more effort and money to change that to something more forgiving. Do a search, there must be dozens of threads on this topic.

Vince, for what it's worth, before I leased my 2008, I test drove the car with the 19's and found it punishing. I chose the 18" wheels and find the ride stiff but manageable. I do have the sport package.

The lower profile tires on the 19's will have a harsher ride than the tires 17 or 18 inch rims. The Sport Susp is a little harsher, but I would guess you will see a good improvement if you switch to a taller tire/smaller rim combo.

Never underestimate the value of a test drive. It's mostly just the sport suspension.

Vince, don't worry! It's just the 19-inch tires and wheels. Switch to 18-inch wheels and you will be fine; I'm using the stock Scorpions. No need to drop to 17-inch wheels (though they would be fine if you want).

I speak from experience. I went from a 2006 non-sport with 17" wheels to a 2009 sport with 18-inch wheels (and I had them both at once for about six weeks so I compared them). Ride smoothness in the two cars is almost identical, with the handling in the 2009 Sport being better.

The low-profile tires on the 19" rims really transmit every road imperfection. This is not the only car I've seen like this.

Thanks guys. Its funny. My wife and I test drove the car before we bought it. I guess because they were smooth roads we did not notice it as much as everyday driving. My Wife's parents have a 06 non sport with 17's and I think the ride is perfect, I guess I should have looked at this board before, I do love the look of the car with the 19's but man it gets a little annoying feeling every bump. Im sure 18's would make a difference. After joining the board and reading ALL of the posts about the ride, damn i started to panic. My wife doesn't seem to mind as much and it will be mostly her car, but I just dont want the car to feel like an Ariel Atom.

I have the 2009 with the 17" standard Pirellis and the ride is something awful. I think the suspension is mushy as the ride tends to be bouncy/swaying over less-than-perfect roads. I don't know if the sport or the bigger wheels make it worse but mine is bad enough.

<--- sarcasm

UncleJ and I were thinking that adding more weight makes the car feel better. I'm thinking some bags of concrete. If your wife doesn't care then count yourself super lucky.
