It needs a new intake manifold and you can really hear it. I had to drive it 55 miles home so I just kept the rpms high and did some fuel cut outs along the way to cool it off. No temp gauge movement but man was it getting hot in the car! Should be fun. It also grinds in 1st and 3rd (syncros) and has general oil leaks throughout. I'll be pulling the tranny with a friend to have it rebuilt (or there's currently a 6-spd Getrag 420G on eBay for 650 out of Cali right now with 150k miles on it). I can tell it's fast but I didn't push it on the freeway. It's going to get a full set of new hoses and as many gaskets as I have time to replace. So stoked on my first Bimmer!!! Dreamed about it since I was 15 and created the email mpower@hotmail; looking forward to being on this forum as well. I've already learned so much. Okay I'm done gushing. |

No yer not, but it's ok. Enjoy it while it lasts. Which should be just about the time until you take on your first major repair.
![]() My two cents on the tranny: If you're gonna buy a different one, go through the trouble of removing, replacing, you might as well get something with some kind of warranty. A used tranny (with 150,000) is probably not going to be much better than what you have now. Unless of course you want to buy a second one, rebuild it, and THEN install it. Otherwise, you might as well rebuild your current one, or buy a rebuilt one with a warranty. I know what it's like though. Tempting to roll the dice if it might save you some money. Agreed
Yeah I agree on wanting to take short cuts. I figure if I can get the tranny pulled and have a professional rebuild it'll be somewhere in between brand new and old 'n shady. Any repair makes you cuss, may as well be cussing at a Bimmer instead of my old Ford Ranger - oh wait, the Ranger is the easiest car in the world to fix...I have to start my first major repair just to get it running for daily driving: All new hoses, many gaskets, and intake manifold.
I'll let the enthusiasm ride till the cussin starts.

Okay good to know. I just got the car yesterday and have only begun..to fight...that got weird. I'm finding some here and there from part-outs. A working tranny w/ 150k (like the one on eBay) that say something arcane like 'tranny worked when it was pulled' are tempting but scary - because you know, why did they pull it in the first place unless it was a part-out from a wreck too. Thanks for the heads up nice to have more than one little brain see a problem.

You can use getrags out of e39s too, and congrats on the deal. Glad to see another bmw owner with enthusiasm, welcome to the forum. Hope you get yours sorted out so you can truely enjoy it. Check out craigslist in SLC in the auto parts section and search for bmw. I check Atlanta's from time to time and there are thousands of good parts.

Thanks yeah I"ve been looking. From what I've gleaned from tons of reading, it's time to replace a lot of hoses, o-rings, and gaskets and a new/used intake manifold and go burn rubber.

Yeah there are a ton of maintance issues with the 540s but if you do the work yourself it won't hurt your wallet too bad. Make sure you get oem parts too. Make sure your cooling system is ok,it's a common problems with bmws. Your intake manifold may just need a new gasket. Also download a copy of the bentley manual, it has a ton of info on all the work your gonna have to take care of. On the bottom of the literature section here http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=912536

I got the manual downloaded. Computer spent the whole night doing text recognition (nerd) from the scanned pdf so it's searchable now
Luckily I do plan on doing the work myself, and have a car encyclopedia brother-in-law who owns BMWs. I did notice the fan assembly seemed to make some noise when I went to see the car for the first time. I made sure coolant was topped off and eased her home. Double clutching relieves the grinding in 3rd for the most part. There seem to be a ton of used M60B40 manifolds out there from 130.00. The M62B44 manifolds are all over the place, made of metal, and cheaper...I wonder if that's because they breathe better (yup, that's forum regurgitation). What have you done to your M540? She looks great. Also, do the incandescent bulbs in the dash cause a lot of heat? My aftermarket stereo lets me plug in my iphone and then the phone goes inside the stereo, and it gave me a heat warning on the phone, which I've never seen before. And even at night the cabin got quite warm till I popped the very quiet sunroof.

I haven't done too much to mine yet. Got it in May and it was pretty well taken care of. I had to put in a new rear shock mount, a new coolant reservior, a new upper radiator hose, new a/c compressor/dryer plus system charged, new aux fan. Ok maybe I have done more than a few. I have some clear euro taillights on the way from Germany. It's an auto so I need to change my fluid and filter. I'm trying to find a better job so do some other things like coilovers and a respray and minor bodywork. Don't have a problem with the heat, sounds a little strange. Are your vents closed? Also there's a dial on the dash inbetween the two vents that is another control for the heat/cooling.

I feel you on the job thing. I had to promise my wife to get it running correctly before digging in hard but a real job is on the horizon. Fingers crossed.

Seems to be a very nice specimen of an E34 you have there sir. Make sure the suspension and cooling system are up to snuff and you should have a nice cruiser there my friend. Welcome to the Fest!

Zoom in on the second photo to see what I mean. It shows much more on lighter colored cars like ours.

Nice tails!! I have the Depo ones, i paid $60 for a brand new set, did you get hella? i know the only difference is name-dropping, my depos have been perfect for 6 years now! You should get chromed amber bulbs to get rid of the egg yolk look
I have the plate filler, i dont have the lock filler though, i dont really care for the difference. I also painted mine in chalkboard paint, my friends love that (and i regret it, unless you like poorly drawn boobs and d!cks) but its cool. I picked up Sahid's steering wheel, looking forward to it. His loss is our gain!

They're depo as well...I guess I over paid but oh well. I love 'em! I really couldn't find some any cheaper. Were the studs on yours shorter?
Mine seems shorter but I just had push them in really freakin' hard. That's hillarous about your filler plate. Now I think I'm gonna get a new bumper, I have a yearly bonus coming up. Plus I may have found a good body shop to paint/fit it.

It's the front bumper, it needs some work not exactly sure if it can be fixed. It has had the bottom lip ripped off, and it's being held up with metal brackets and rivots. But if you still want it I sent it to you if you'll cover the shipping.
