At least alot more space than the X5 inside. And despite what most would think, this "3" is only inches smaller in each dimension than its "5" sibling.

Your new car scenario sounds kind of interesting!

Now that I see it in red, i'm not too sure i like it anymore (as i had in the past). Is it me or does it seem like a good design was thrown into a blender and what came out was in front and rear ends?

Looks like BMW may have learned a little something from the small cargo space on the X5. This actually does look larger than my car, though of course I'll have to see one in person. I gotta say that this red isn't doing it any favors. Makes it look cheap like a Ford Escape and/or a minivan (a'la MB M-class). And what's up with the lighting/exposure in the shots? Looks like they were taken outside today (we're having lousy weather in LA today).

It does look incredibly roomy. I agree about the color. The only color combo I could stand would be black with black interior. At least it would hide the contrasting cargo carpet and all the cheap plasti in the front. But certainly good to see they actually tried to get some utility out of the X3.

I like the red.

And please don't spaz on me anyone, but this might be my ticket to staying "in the family" should we transfer to Alaska. We need something to haul a trailer with two motorcycles, plus have plenty of cargo space, 4wd and not a wagon (at least I'm pretty sure my husband would boo one).

Why is the back grey? I don't see how this car won't take sales from the X5. Same car.

Hmmm . . . . interesting. I've been contemplating options of what BMW to perhaps replace the mini-van with. It would need to have more space than the X5 but be able to pull something. I was thinking an e39 wagon maybe. This might be a good choice.

But I don't know anything about the towing capability of 5 series wagon. Anybody have any idea what this could pull?

Found out the e39 wagon would probably be no bueno.

Are there any projected specs out there for this thing yet?

Why? There are still plenty around.

I picked up a preliminary X3 brochure at the dealer. If you ask, they should have one to give.

I like it.

I also like the gray cargo hold with the tan interior. Smart.

I hate the mishmash of colors, but I really thought the Sand cargo area on sand interior E46 Tourings was just asking for a mess (and one of the reasons I got black).

Well,
There's good precedent for tan/brown leather and black carpet in the back. It's worked well on the 325xit. I'm a little jealous of that 3.0 liter, though.

RE: The design of the X3

I recently had a long discussion over breakfast with a Vice President from Nissan North America about BMW and their more recent (Bangle) designs...

In a nutshell, he said he LIKED the direction BMW was going. BMW had to make changes to stay competitive in the market, and unique designs (even if you don't like them) keep customers happy (and coming back). If they (BMW) kept making new models based on old designs... their look would become dated and boring. According to him, BMW had to go with "Bangle" designs as the market demands it.

Talking to Jon, he would be really worried about pulling a car with an e39.

Doh! I was at Irvine BMW yesterday. Can you bring your brochure on Sat.? When are they scheduled to be for sale here?

You wanna tow a car? I doubt you could do that in a X5 safely, let alone a X3.

Somebody (DougDogs?) posted once about pulling a pretty good size boat with an X5. Jon said his X5 was a SOLID tow vehicle.
I don't think I'd try it with one of those big enclosed trailers, but maybe a lightweight open trailer.

It appears the X5's towing caps are 5000 and 6000lb for 3.0 and 4.4 respectively. I believe one of the problems is that allowable tongue weight is quite low (well under 1000lb) which makes sense for a unibody vehicle. A light open trailer, car, and not too many parts/tools, and not climbing too many hills would probably work.
