Exclamation Sos warning light appears as yellow sword on dashboard

Just recently in very cold weather here in Milwaukee as I first started my car a SOS YELLOW WARNING LIGHT APPEARS IN THE FORM OF A "YELLOW SWORD". Within a few seconds it disappears and when I go into computer for check messages it says all systems are okay.

what's this all about? Never had this happen before . I am sure that I did not inadvertantly push the bmw assist sos button on the roof panel. has another else experienced this. I have a 2008 550i with sports package 6MT. shigeki

It may just be the cold temp warning. When the outside temp drops below 3c (not sure what the warning is set at in farenheit in the US), the car warns you with a snowflake symbol and tone, then leaves a warning light up for a few minutes. No stored codes after that point.

Thumbs down warning light with yellow "sword"

I have seen warning lights for low temp, actually 37 degrees in symbol of a snowflake and have also seen yellow skid marks indicating tires are slipping. BUT I have never seen a picture of a YELLOW SWORD appearing after a message SOS.

I say some computer glich. hopefully will not reoccur. I will discuss with service department. I just thought one of you Bimmers out there may have experiened the same error warning light. Shigeki

shigeki,

Do you have comfort access?
If so, if you start your car without the key, sometimes (I'm not sure exactly when but a "KEY" icon will appear), could be what you thought was a sword....just a thought.

I think this is also refered to as the "yellow dong." I've seen it lots on my info screen (main screen b/w speedo and tach). I've been told it means your accessory power is on when you exit the vehicle. It is apparently active for 20 minutes, so your radio could drain your battery some if you dotn pay attention...hence the warning light at shut down.

Does that sound familiar? Look to see what the message says at the bottom of your iDrive screen next time you shut down and see the "dong."

Post a pic. I will try to do the same this evening....

I've had the SOS warning come on 3 or 4 times on my 3-Series. It is related to BMW Assist and indicates the system is inop. In my case, the BMW Assist was still working and the dealer just reset the computer every time. I won't be renewing my BMW Assist when the warranty is up so it's not much of a concern for me.

SOS with Knife through it

I have a 2007 550i and the same thing happened to me today. After shutting down and restarting it went away. Like you, I know I didn't touch the SOS BMW assist button. At the same time my nav or sound system would work--strange!

This has happened to me from time to time only in cold weather. Except when it would happen to me I had no sound either. It took a few trips to the dealer to figure it out. It ended up being that moisture had made it into the shark fin and was causing the antenna to ground out. They replaced the shark fin and haven't had the problem since --for the past three years now. During this process of trying to figure out the issue I found that doing a idrive reboot cleared the SOS issue and allowed my sound to come back.

Sos

Makes sense--it was snowing so moisture could have been a factor. How do you reboot the iDrive.
In case anyone has had a problem with battery going dead-lock your car every time you get out of it, even when parked in the garage. I live in Colorado so mine may set for a couple of weeks in the winter and the battery would go dead. The salesman where I bought it told me to lock it since the computers continue to work even when the engine is off. Since following his advice I haven't had any problems.

In my car I hold down the disc eject buttons and the volume button on front console. You can do this even without an issue just to test to see if it reboots, it should.
