1995 325i convertible top problem...

The people I bought it from apparently took the motors out or disabled them in some way. Now the top has to be put up and down manually. When I'm driving and I hit a bump the windows roll down about 2 inches like it's going to put the top down. Any way to fix this? They told me to find the "sensor" that makes the windows go down for the automatic top.. idk if they were completely sure of what the were talking about though.

Could be a number of possible causes. Need to know if you have the semi-auto or fully auto top. If you have the semi-auto top, you have to release the handle at the front of the top and push the front of the top up to start the top retracting. If you have the fully auto top you just hold the button down.

I'm not sure on the top being fully or semi auto... to put it down I just relaese the lever above the rear view and push it back. then lift up the back window part, then the stow away compartment and push it all in. the close the stow away.

okay you have a fully manual top.

i think

when you want to put your top down.... do you roll down your windows.. then do the lever then put it down?

or are the windows automatic?

You've got the semi-automatic top.

The windows going down the 2 inches could be either related to the convertible top or you could have a problem with the master window switch that controls all 4 windows simultaneously.

For the top controller to command the windows down, the handle above the rearview has to be released and the front of the top pushed up enough to switch micro switch S4 (see attached PDF file) while the top switch is sumultaneously held. Seems like too many things would have to have gone wrong all at once for this to be causing your window issue.

I think it's more likely you've got a problem with the master window switch or the wiring to it.

The fix for the windows dropping at random and when going over bumps is to replace the door microswitch. A quick search for that will turn up a ton of threads.

Good luck.

If this was a door microswitch problem, wouldn't the action be isolated to one window? I had the same thing happen to me last night, twice. All four windows rolled down about 2" and stopped. I looked for a microswitch on the top and top edged of windshield, but didn't see one. I have a manual top from the factory btw. No top motors.

If it was the door microswitch the window wouldn't drop more than about 1/2" and it would only be one door. Seems like there's an issue with the switch in the console that controls all 4 windows, or the wiring going to/from that switch.

That's what I was thinking. Was doing some poking around different places and was wondering if the microswitch for the top cover may be a problem. I know it's only supposed to operate when the driver's door is open, but have to start somewhere When the key is on, driver's door open and convertible top cover opens, the windows all drop a couple of inches.
Was also wondering if it could be the relay that this micro switch sends a signal to.

I found this post and one on another site which both had the same problem. Hoping maybe they had found answers that might lead to solving my problem. I can replace the switch, which is easy enough, but would like to make sure that it fixes my problem.

New to this forum and want to thank Vinnie G.for that awesome video about resynching,,very informative,So I did that and found that something got seriously jammed when owner was trying to make top go back up,I believe it is the rod that controls the tunnel latch cover where it slips on the post. before I got the motors synched I noticed the arm off the T.Latch cover mechanism so disengaged it and slipped it back on not very easy to do and noticed the post did not have the same amount sticking out all around but went with it anyway then went through the Vinnie G. video process and bamm it worked then went to go through the open and close process again and it jammed up so much that I had to take off the tunnel latch cover to get in trunk ,once in trunk just disengaged latch cover mechanism and closed top and left it alone,,,Any ideas, thoughts or help is greatly appreciated.
