Oil level low.. but IDrive not saying so?

My 2004 645 is not sounding healthy and when I checked the oil it is just below the minimum mark on the dipstick....

Is this normal or should the sensor tell me its low? I checked my oil when the car was fully warmed up etc.

I will buy some oil today, would this be ok? castrol 0w-30 fully synthetic oil?

you should check oil on a cold engine... so your oil level may be ok...

at least thats how it is with my other cars....

---- EDIT ----- manual says to check with the engine warm....

I believe the manual specifically states the engine has to be at operating temp or warm. Not sure. The newer 6er models don't have a dipstick so we have to rely on the iDrive.

I'm new to the 6 so I really don't know too much about it... but with other cars you check the oil with the dipstick cold...

the dipstick checks the oil level in the pan, once you start the car, the oil leaves the pan and goes into the rest of the engine... so if you're expected to warm it up, I would leave it sitting for half an hour with a warm engine before checking to allow the oil to go back in the pan...

with an electronic dipstick I'd think it can be sophisticated enough to compensate for this, but with a manual dipstick, I doubt it's that smart... I've only checked it while running on the road and it came back normal... but I doubt engineers anticipate people to check a manual dipstick with a running car..

I'll defer to the experts on this...

do we even have an oil pan? I know some newer high performance cars don't....

back to your question, ideally idrive will let you know.. but not sure how the 645 differs from the 650i if your dipstick is manual... with an electronic disptick I would think it will let me know..

Glad your V8 sounds normal again...

Mine will not take a reading unless the car is running and at temp. I actually got a low oil warning yesterday. It even had a warning message saying that the ignition had to be on. I tried turning it on without starting it with a single press of the start button and it didn't take a reading. I purchased the BMW kit you can velcro to the side of your trunk to hold a quart of oil. Put it in and all was fine and dandy. I highly recommend this for everyone. Very cheap and protects you if you are on the road and away from any sources for the right oil. It's normal to need a quart inbetween a the 15K service.

This is the kit I am talking about (comes with paper funnels, gloves, and wipes) http://accessories.bmwusa.com/ItemVi...&productId=368

I think it is always best to check the oil level manually every couple of thousand miles

I would agree but it's not possible in the 650.
