Please Help Me 1st tme M owner here

First off I'm happy to be in the company of individuals who have a passion for BMW. I myself have always been a huge BMW fan. but unfortunately my wallet just got to the point where I can actually own one I'm 26 BTW. I can honestly say It was one of my greatest days when I purchased my 2003 M3 Alpine wht/Imola red. I'm now sad to say that only after 7months of ownership I have a serious problem ( I think) I was hoping someone out there in this vast community might be able to help point me in the right direction.

My car has decided it no longer wants to turn on, It's an SMG so in order to start the shifter needs to be set to zero. when I turn the key the gear meter reads 1 even though the shifter is set to 0. all of the electrical comes on including radio the windows work its just wont fire up. Even when I put the shifter in reverse it still reads as 1. Even when its set to 1 it reads 1!!

There is also a yellowish orange light that pops on it is located on the far right of the instrument cluster. I do not know the exact name but I can say its not the traction light but the other. I apologize for my ignorance :o(..

Even when I called the tow company out we could not get the car to move it was essentially stuck in one spot. We could not push it forward or back. The weird part is the I was able to shift in and out of gears. It just wasn't being recognized by the computer it only read 1 or first gear.

The tow driver ended up pulling the car up from behind using his tow truck.

Fast forward to today I take it to a so called Bimmer specialist and he tells me its something with the transmission computer where it isn't recognizing the car is being put into gear. Unfortunately he states the dealer is the only one that can help. Another guy tells me it could be the mass air flow sensor.

Please I hope there is someone out here who has had a similar experience. I would be most grateful for any help that I can receive in this. I look forward to all of your feed back thank you for reading.

Go visit m3forum.net, in the E46 forum and you will probably get a lot more experienced eyes to see your question and provide some feedback. Good luck!

You should try changing your salmon colored relay that is located in the relay box on top of drivers side shock tower P/N 12631742690 . This relay relates to SMG. Not expensive to try.
