Peformance tire that is quiet & smooth

Hi Bimmer ppl & Gary,

I am looking into getting some new wheels and tires for my 330. I need 235-45-17's to go on m72 V-spoke BMW replica rims.

Has anyone been real happy with the Smooth & quiet attributes of thier performance tire's ???

I have heard some can create road noice etc... I really like the smooth/quiet nature of my stock Goodyear RSA's, but realize they are not a performance tire.

I have been looking at Conti 2's and Dunlop sp 9000's ??
I do not drive in ice or snow at all.

Any advice or feedback ?????

I like both of your choices for a performance tire that concentrates on ride quality. The Dunlop SP 9000 and the Contact 2 would be my top two picks for summer tires that have the best ride/noise comfort.

Like Nick hinted at ... both will handle better than RSA tires by a considerable margin!

A compromise to consider is one of the UHP all season tires like the Conti Extreme Contact, which will fall in between what you have, and the Dunlop 9000 or Contact 2 in performance and ride quality.

I suppose I should have phrased that a little better, but I do wonder if anyone who really likes the RS-As will be happy with performance tires.

For example, I really HATE my Sumitomo HTR+, but I've recommended them to a couple of people who are ECSTATIC about them. Nothing wrong with that (although I may poke fun), it's just a matter or matching the right tire to the right person.

As far as I'm concerned, if the Falken Azenis Sports were just a little quieter (shops have been known to diagnose multiple wheel bearing failures with them mounted), they're be my perfect tire.

I'm confused, Flash...style 72M v-spoke rims are 18-inchers and 235/45R-17s are larger than normal E46 fitments.

It seems to me like you need 225/40R-18 tires.

Nick you are correct, I am asking for the ideal tire which may not be out there ??...Good grip & quiet are a tough combo, from what I hear the performance tire get louder with wear...makes sense.

Flash, Re S-03s or F1s

Stick with your earlier choices, or the Yoko AVS ES-100, Bridgestone RE-950, or Dunlop SP A2. Those tires are all siginificantly grippier than your RS-As, while being quiet (especially the SC2s) and having a nice ride (and inexpensive, and equal or better life). Although there are some reports of the ES-100 getting noisier as it wears, not sure how bad that is since most people think it is a great balanced tire for the street.

The S-03s and the like are GREAT max performance tires. Which means they grip like H3ll, turn in fast, cost a fortune, and won't last past 15,000ish, ride a bit stiff, and make a little noise. When you gotta have 'em you'll know and all of their vices won't matter as long as they grip better than anything else.

It seemed like you had a good idea of what you wanted, stick to your plan!

Agreed... love 'em. I like the stiff ride and a little bit of noise though.

I think you understand what I am looking to accomplish...upgrade from the RSA's, but not quite the full deal 15K tire. I am going to take a look at some of the ones you mentioned.

I have to put some freeway miles on frequently.....hence why "I have to" chose a balanced tire, not that I dont like to race around now & then

Hey Plaz, I heard great reviews on them SO3 pole position tires Nice to see yur name in a forum other than Politics...lol, I enjoy your views over there too !!

I have had a couple of experiences with the Bridgestone RE950. It's a very nice tire. I personally don't find the S-03 to be such a hard riding tire...but the difference may be that my S-03s are on light rims for the track, and the RE950s are on a wheel that weighs maybe 4 lbs more. It's amazing how much a lighter wheel contributes to a better ride.
