Just published a post on the common brake light circuit failure. It can be a bigger PITA than it first appears.

I had similar issues with my brake lights. Try lightly sanding the contacts in the socket where the light fixture plugs in. Also slightly bend out the tabs on the fixture. But be careful not to bend them out too far. Hope this helps

That can be cause sometimes, but most of the time its the switch behind the brake pedal, nothing to do with lights themselves.

There is a big difference between "Brake Light Circuit failure" message, and Brake Light Failure" message.
The brake light circuit is usually caused by the switch on the pedal. It's not that hard. in fact the hardest parts is getting yourself under there. I've found that just removing the seat makes it a lot easier. Then you have to understand how the switch mounts. Depress the brake pedal, pull out the white stem, pull out the red locking ring, and then squeeze the two mounts. It really helps to look at the new switch to see how it works.

i've been getting this message for 2 years, been thru whole wire-traces, new onboard computers, all of it. last time i yook it in, they knocked out the clock.
the thing is, my brakelights DO work. could this have something to do with the rear-window light being disconnected due to coming with a spoiler? i'm at wits' end with this glitch.. |

I'm working on that right now. I got the switch weeks ago and put it off because everyone says it's a pain in the A$$. Sure enough it was. I sat (when I say sat I was actually arched in the most uncomfortable position in the history of the world) and fought with that switch for close to two hours. It is the hardest thing I've had to do on that car and I've done brakes, short shifter, throttle body, trans. oil, diff. oil and headliner.
