Wow1 Some of y'all have some low mileage!

2003 540i M Sport, 118,000 miles

major work done:
cooling system overhaul
suspension overhaul (kinda still in progress)
valve cover gaskets

minor work done:
rear vapor seals
thermostat
fading, separating interior panels
fuel vent solenoids
front bushings

planned:
tranny flush
power steering hoses
valley pan gasket, throttle body gasket, front intake manifold gasket, rear intake crankcase diaphram, intake manifold gasket, water pump, main drive and a/c belts (all getting done at once next month)
fan clutch (pre-emptive)
right now runs like a champ!
most of this is preventative, and gaskets are only showing slight signs of leakage, so i figure it would be a good idea to replace now

My cousin owns a body shop and got the car from the insurance pool. It was involved in a minor front end accident. The driver side air bags deployed, not the steering column air bag. When the insurance company added up the repair cost, given that it is a 12 year old vehicle, they decided to pay off the owner and totaled the car. My cousin got the air bags from a donor car, new angel eye headlights, an M type front bumper, a new 16" rim, and did all the repairs at his cost. He knew that I was looking for an E39 style BMW and gave me a call. I ran a car fax and test drove the car. It feels and drives like a brand new car. I found an expired insurance card in the glove box and got in touch with the now 85 year old original owner. He told me that he would have kept the car if he knew it could have been repaired. He called the car his " cream puff". I asked him about the low miles and he told me that he only drove it every now and then. I hope to keep this car as original as possible and won it for a long time.

2001 540iA ~98k mi before I traded it. Only major repair was coolant system @~40k mi, which was thankfully covered under warranty. Other than that, the water cooled alternator went out around ~80k. Oh yea, the motor was sludged since I purchased it @~30k mi CPO but regardless she ran STRONG.

125,000 and a little change.

Central IL driving racks up miles quick, so that will be moving up soon.

What does it mean to have a sludged motor?
Any problems tend to occur more often after 100k than others? Im looking at a two owner car from an independent dealer who has failed to retrieve the cars service records from the previous owner. But, he claims the last 50k of miles are on file with one dealership they just wont give the records up cause he "didn't pay for them."

Worth it?

Dan (Nocolon21),

As long as the PPI report looks good and you're comfortable with the thought that there might be some DIY or indy repair work to be done with it then you should be good.

The mileage, 160k, might not be an issue if it's been taken care of very well. Just look out for the usual suspects ... gaskets, cooling, suspension, transmission ... and make sure that they've had some repair or replacements made. Good luck!

Mine is nearing 168k and it's still pretty cool to drive. Of course, too many trips to those automated car washes has left its indelible marking.

2001 530i automatic with just 38,774 miles at purchase 3 weeks ago, she's got a bit over 39K now.

Tag says Royalrot Metalic for paint which is a dark red with beige int. The car drives like nothing I've ever owned and I'm hooked to say the least. It's really the wife's DD but I get plenty of time behind the wheel also.

So far just basic maintenance and TLC like an oil change, PS reservoir leak fix, cabin filters, new factory in-dash cupholders & added the TEC, air filter, Weather Tech mats and new belts. I've got some Evans NPG+ on the way and will tackle a drivers seat foam fix and rear window regulator repair soon too.

This site has been a great resource for me as a noob BMW owner and I appreciate it.

As of 11/15/11, my BMW 530i has 79,200 miles on it. It runs great! I might be selling it in the near future so I can get an E60 550i.
