Spied - F30 Next Gen 3 Series in the FINAL sheet metal - Most revealing pic YET!

Bimmerfest spies have brought us pictures of the next generation 3 series several times in the past 6 months but nothing this revealing! All the heavy plastic camo has come off, we're down to the real sheet metal of the car. While still covered with swirly paint this is the real sheet metal that will hit the dealership floors.

While the intricate body details are still to be seen wen can tell the F30 has grown a little over the E90 but has a distinct E90 like green house. The front kidney grills have grown wider but not as wide as the current F10 Five series. The angle eyes/corona rings are now cut off top and bottom for a meaner look we've seen with the recent Vision concept cars.

Rumors say the convertible will retain the folding hard top despite the F13 6 series getting a soft top.

In the US we'll get the all new 2.0 Turbo engine in a base 328 model and a moderately tweaked N55 6 cylinder turbo in a 335 model. For Europe there are rumors of a 3 cylinder, something that isn't likely to come to the states.

Production is slated to start late in 2011 as a model year 2012.

Updated with pictures of the 328i F30 - Sporting a 4 cylinder turbo engine?

Thanks to our friends at F30Driver.com for the additional pictures of the F30 in alpine white - http://www.f30driver.com/threads/109...cylinder-turbo

Definitely an E90 evolution and not as drastic as E46-->E90. And the Borat Thong stays!

Looks too much like the 5 series as far as I can see, especially the back. I liked the 3 series to have a distinct look.. Now 7,5 and 3 will look all too similar.

1 sausage, 3 lengths. We knew this would be the case but I can see why some would want more differentiation.

I agree, I don't like it when all the models look the same... They need details to make them unique. The current 3 and the last 5 didn't look the same, they were easy to tell apart. Oh well, I hope at least the 3 didn't gain weight.

Nice look but followed the benz foot steps.

Just how the C, E, & S-class all are similar so is the 3,5 & 7...Only difference is that the 7 is the only vehicle out of them all without LED lights?? Go Figure

First post updated with new pictures of another test mule running around Munich. Based on the differences in exhaust layout it looks like the black car could be a 335i with a turbo inline six and the alpine white car is a 328 with the 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbo.

I sure hope that there are some surprises under those swirls. From what I can see the car looks too evolutionary from the current e90.

So far I only like the headlights and the side mirrors. Rest is like a miniature 7. I also expect there to be some element of surprise.

Not the current generation of merc. You can tell them apart. The previous generation of merc was hard to tell apart from far. They all looked like carbon copies of different sizes. It was the opossite for BMW on the previous generation. Now they making copies. But different sizes. The LED were invented in 2009 so BMW didnt have time to fit them in the car but every thing else got LEDs.

CarandDriver Reports: " BMW will offer four- and six-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines. This forced-induction mantra applies to the next M3 as well, which will receive a 400-plus-hp inline-six"

So the M3 is going back to an Inline-6 but with forced induction. Hmm, interesting.. Yet they made this 4L V8 in the E9X lighter than the E46 Inline. Should be interesting to see how they make reliable power out of that IF this is true. What do you guys think?

I'm not opposed to signal lights on the mirrors but I hope it doesn't actually come with the enormous orange monstrosities.
Otherwise I'm liking what I see. The inward curve shape of the trunk lid is reminiscent of the e46 and even the e36.

Agreed, those mirror signal lights are huge. What the ??? Rest of the car looks pretty good and would agree more of an evolution. All in all, not too upset I got the existing 3 and didn't wait.

LOL....The E46 is in the past, get over it!

It's delusional to think that anything pre-E9x is relevant in today's automotive world. HP, looks, and options....all inferior,

I can't wait to see the M3 Badged F3x. I'll consider getting it.

So what is the consensus on production for the F30 in light of these shots? Throughout the boards posters allude to BMW's 7-year cycle as reasoning for the new model not arriving until late 2012 as a 2013. However, I still have difficulty with the re-tooling processes scheduled for August (visitors to Regensburg are also reporting assembly portions of the line closed to tours).

Can anyone clarify how these dates come together in a rational manner? If BMW re-tools E90 production but does not plan on delivering F30's until late 2012, how do they fill the 1-year gap in 3-series production? I simply can't believe they will stockpile a year's worth of 3's in the hope that they'd sell, nor would they concede a year of production to the IS & C-class. IMO either E90/E92 production will go well into next year, or the F30 should arrive sooner than predicted. The level of finish in the latest undisguised spy shots suggest a design stage much farther along than the generally accepted schedule. Why bother with so much secrecy, then drive the unmasked car in the wild a year before official announcement?

Worthless side note: Two different ED specialists have noted during purchase discussions that F30's may become available for ED winter/spring 2012. Of course there is so much misinformation being passed around it's only rumor, and both have stated so in the understanding that the F30 question will delay our purchase until that time (as opposed to fall 2012 availability, in which case we'll config an E90 M3 for ED this year). It's certainly a switch from the "let's get you in a car as soon as possible" routine...

Everything I'm reading says the F30 will be hear much sooner than calender year 2012. What doesn't make sense about that is that we haven't seen any concept cars yet and those usually precede a new model by 4-6 months. There were also rumors a 3 series GT would be the precursor to the F30, the way the F07 5er GT came out before the F10 5 Series and we haven't seen anything about 3er GT.

Where that leaves us I'm not sure.

Overheard while picking up a new X3 at the dealer on Tuesday: " We aren't going to be getting any 3-series for a few months later this year because they are switching to the new model, so we're going to need to find a way to pick up our sales elsewhere during that time period."

i sorta like it. i think a smaller, less bloated looking 5er might be perfect. and i'm delighted to hear they're keeping both the 335 (turbo 6) and hard-top roof for the 'vert. might have to do another ED next spring.
