I want to purchase 1995 BMW 5 series 525i. It has 183,153 miles on it. Should this be a concern? Are there some things that I need look for? This will be my first BMW. I am researching, to find out all I can. Body is in good condition, engine seems to be very strong. Any tips? Thank you in advance.

That is the key. Receipts from a dealer or shop the owner used. My 525i had 203,000 miles on it when I got it almost 5 years ago. The seller had all of the maintenance records from the 100,000 miles he put on it. I have all of the paperwork from the 45,000 miles I have put on it. If taken care of you can expect 300,000 miles plus........Great cars......

Do a compression test on the engine...its cheap and quick and any mech's shop....the correct compression should be 10-11 bar with not more than 0.5 difference between the highest and lowest chamber readings.

I would recommend a pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic you know well or one you trust. He can not only do a compression test, but can check for a host of other potential problems with the car. 183K might be just broken if the right service records back it up!

Good advice Goose..
Take a look at its carfax as well. I had over 191g when I bought mine, and its going strong. Really look at the thing and test drive it and feel it. I had a Chevy Chevette that I rolled the odomimeter on and then some before it died (and I beat the crap outta it). BMWs are way better cars. No reason what so ever you couldnt roll it twice or three times if it is well looked after.

Thank you for your helpful hints. The car had no work records. Yet I did an auto check. I don't have an owners Manuel. My immediate concerns are: 1. Wiper control stem is broke. You have to play with it to get it to work. 2. Remote mirrors adjustment not working. (where is the fuse?) 3. Turn signal works but only the back lights (white) flashes on the rear. I would love to have remote door unlock. Any help would highly be appreciated.

Doesn't sound like anything too bad is wrong with the car, maybe some electrical bugs to work out.
It would be a bugger if you found some of these minor details wrong with the engine or drivetrain though... Who is selling this car, for what reason, and who has owned it? Simple questions like this bring out the truth quickly in sellers
