Intermittent Camshaft Position Sensor Fault
Last summer my check engine light came on and my 2001 330i started accelerating very poorly. I pulled out my trusty code reader and determined it was the camshaft position sensor on the intake side. I promptly replaced it with a non oem unit. Problem solved, not really.
Ever since, every so often the car accelerates poorly in the same fashion as before. However, it repairs itself almost as quickly as it comes on. My code reader will then show me a cps fault, although the cel has not come on. Logic tells me this intermittent problem is probably a bad cps. However, before I go and by another one (oem this time,) I want opinions on if there is something else that could be causing this. Like a vanos solenoid or something else. Any opinions would be helpful. Thanks!! |

I have no idea, but I did hear that OEM sensors are way better for BMWs

aftermarket is good for a lot of things, but when it comes to sensors i would go oem. also check and make sure u have good connections everywhere. a bad or loose connection could cause the intermittent problem.

Did you clear the code after you read it the first time? If not, that might be what you are reading (they are stored unless they are cleared even if the problem has been fixed).
That being said, and like others have stated, when it comes to these types of sensors, it is best to stick with OEM. That may mean Bosch or some equivalent, but the ones from the auto parts stores can be lesser quality Chinese pieces.

Could also be your engine software needs to be updated. I know mine is from 2000 and the mechanic said it wouldn't hurt to update. I also get this at times and have stalled twice while stepping on it from stop. I think I also need the camshaft position sensor. Sean |
