Talking DIY Reset Service Indicator

I'm going to tell you how to reset your service indicator on the iDrive after you have preformed general maintenance on the car.

I was changing my Micro-filter, but you can do it for all the things like oil changes and smogs and brake pads and such. NOTHING is done via the iDrive, it is all done using the odometer reset button near the speedometer.

Follow these directions very closely

1. Put your key in the ignition and press the starter button, ( without foot on break ) all your warning lights should come on on the dash board.. P-Brake, Check Engine, etc.

2 Push your odometer reset button near the speedometer so your trip odometer goes to zero. ( this step is important )

3. Take key out of ignition

4. (Repeat step one), press start button, without foot on break, so all the warning lights come on again.

5. Quickly press the odometer reset button, and hold it for 5-10 seconds until an exclamation point, or icon for different service comes up. It will show up in between the speedometer and the tach. The micro filter comes up first for me. ( You can see a glossary of service icons in the service part of your iDrive )

6. To switch between service icons, quickly release and press the odometer button until the desired icon comes up.

7. To reset the service time, once on the desired icon, press and hold the odometer reset button for another 5-10 seconds and the milage under the icon should reset.

Now your done!

I preformed this on a 2006 530xi Wagon ( mom's car )

I was kinda shooting in the dark but got pretty lucky finding this.

If you at any point want to not reset anything either don't press anything for 15 seconds or take the key out of the ignition.

Good luck to all, it took me 2 trys my first time, but it's pretty easy

Feel free to ask questions

This is very similar to this thread. Good info to have if you work on your car. I'll most likely start doing this once my free maintenance ends.

Funny/Sad thing... A couple months ago, I was telling my Service Advisor at Towson BMW that you can perform re-sets via this method. He said, "this cannot be done. I am 100% certain." I said, "I read it on an internet forum and folks have done it." He said, " no, impossible". He then tried to sell me a service diagnostic tool of some sort for hundreds of dollars that allows you to reset the codes. "This is the ONLY way this can be done, You need this if you ever want your service light to come off when you do your own maintenance".

I have used this method since with NO problems. YOu would think that these folks would know something so basic. ???

It does work on my 2006 530xit. I have had to resort to it after the dealer forgot to reset the service indicator (doh!) after the free oil change or microfilter change.

Worked like a charm on my 07 530i ! Just changed my microfilter, and reset the warning indicator light. It changed the mileage to 100,000. Current mileage is about 64000. That seems too long, is there another step to specify what mileage I prefer?

What a great forum. I'm sure I'll be back for more as my mileage ticks on.

Thanks!

Thanks jackrule...

Your step by step instructions were great!! I'm a female and I was able to reset the indicator on my 2007 530i. NTB changed my brake fluid for half the cost of the dealership but they did not know how to reset the indicator. I saved a lot of money and time...thanks to you!!!

I have a 2004 525i - I must use a key. You are giving the remedy for a "button start" model.
Help us that must use keys.

If you have the 2004, the YouTube video which shows you step by step is a 2004. Just google it and you will find the video

Can't this be shortened by deleting steps 1, 2, and 3? I believe these are redundant but others on this board may have more experience than me with it.

========================================

1. Put your key in the ignition and press the start button, (without foot on brake) all your warning lights should come on on the dash board.. P-Brake, Check Engine, etc.

2 Push your odometer reset button near the speedometer so your trip odometer goes to zero. (this step is important )

How do you do this to reset the spark plug interval? I'm changing my spark plugs this weekend and will need to reset it afterwards.

Just did my 2006 530xi due to spark plugs. Steps 1-3 not needed.
