Use of Diesel Fuel Additives for your ds
BMW does not recommend any additives for the diesel as far as I know. Are any of d owners supplement ULSD with additives to increase lubricity, CETANE numbers.....
I'm planing to use PS... Any thoughts.

Note that BMW does allow the use of biodiesel in concentrations up to 5%. Anything over 2% will give you adequate lubricity.

People who have used it say it's not necessary (so far, anyway). There's been no increase in gas mileage, but the true test, I suppose is the long term effects, which nobody has enough miles (not even Chris) to determine.

yeah- over the years i've seen very few credible claims for increased mpg's from additives. Best thing for d owners to do is try and find true premium diesel (>47 cetane)and run lubricity additive (the latter being necessary in the US but not anywhere else)

I have run one tank of fuel with Diesel Kleen+Cetane Booster in my 335d and I saw NO increase in mpg and felt no difference in the way the car drives.
I agree that the best course is getting the premium fuel...so far, I haven't found any pumps labeled with a higher cetane rating than 40 but there is one Exxon station that I fuel up at during my travels and my car runs better on this fuel than any other.....the station is at an Exxon distributor and he also has B5 and B20 at the pump. I agree with Stugots that no one has enough miles on the clock to see what the ULSD is going to do to our rides compared to the diesel drivers across the pond, but I hope the pocket protector group at BMW took the fuel we have into consideration. |

I was under impression that diesel additives are mainly used to improve lubricity, cetane numbers, they prevent jelling, microbes growth and so on; not to much increasing "btu" number (I guess any additive manufacturer has its own claims) . I would not really expect them to increase mpg. All the posts are right about not enough long term tests.

So, I am at 2100 miles and have not used a lubricity additive...what are good ones? How often do you need to add them?

I live in California, which is why I don't feel it necessary. I can see why other states it might be necessary, however.

does Cali have a more stringent lubricity spec than ASTM? what is it?

BMW approves the use of biodiesel up to 5% as an additive. This would be more than enough lubricity (B2 is sufficient).

You are refereeing to winter diesel paragraph, it tells you not to use any additives; but dgeek is right at the same time they let you use up to B5 which is a blend and may be considered additive as well.
As I said before in IL most of the diesel is B11, but they are some stations with D2. D2 ULSD is by nature dry...so my thought was additive would improve (ULSD compliant) lubricity some.

there's numerous studies like this one http://www.biodiesel.org/resources/r...201_gen394.pdf showing that lubricty is somewhat directly proportional with biodiesel concentration. additives can also be harmful and further reduce lubricity. first, what is the goal for an additive? if pure lubricity, then 2-5% BD blend should be all you need. i'm buying premium high grade diesel form a local manufacturer, that claims it's cetane numbers are 55-59, and add biodiesel to it, to a final concentration of 2-5% aprox. i fill the tank(15-16 gal), no top-off, then add 2 liters(half gallon) BD 100%.

the only thing i'd suggest is adding the B100 before you fill the tank for a better mixture. |

Ok, I found 2 stations within 5 miles of my house that have Biodiesel (B5)...maybe living in rural Maryland has some advantages. So I should put a few gallons of this in then add the Premium Diesel to fill the tank? I am still a diesel newbie. I read the information about not exceeding B5, but I wonder if I mix it with the Premium Diesel if I am getting enough of the benefits of the lubricity of biodiesel while maintaining the right Cetane numbers of the Premium Diesel.

the B5 is already at the upper end of the allowable limit. I would fill up with that and add something like Power Service for a Cetane boost. do you know the cetane of the base fuel in the B5?
one thing to beware of: the label "premium" on diesel pumps is not tightly regulated in some areas. So unless you know that it is premium, don't assume so. |

Diesel additives...
I use Diesel Kleen+Cetane boost. But more importantly I go to truck stops, pull up by the big rigs & they give me a funny look. Fresher fuel, & find out when main tanks where filled up last. Wait a couple of days to let main tanks resedue settle down from the stir up from filling.

I use AMSOIL Cetane BOOSTER(it works!!) and Amsoil Diesel Injector cleaner and to put it frankly I havent seen increase way up but my car is running great since 2011 two months after I bought it, I say it works cause I did not use it for approx. i 1/2 month and when I added both to the car I went limp mode after driving 100 miles then the same day the car was driven by my mechanic on the half mile run and he clocked on the speedo 150 mph twice NO it was not the the half mile he decided to run it to the end. Needless to say the car got so EVER LOSE that ever since that day im getting better fuel mileage, our cars need to be driven HARD so we can lossen all that SOOT! Trust me whatever you use will be fine but please beat your car up once in a while like a two cent whore she will love more so LOL

additives.
Has anyone tried Sea-Foam in their diesel?? Met a mech who just works on German cars. Said to pour half a can into new fuel filter when you change it. Will smoke but clean out the carbon build up in the intake trac, but don't rev the hell out of the motor in park. Has anyone ever heard of this?

New 335D owner; curious if there is a recommended national brand diesel that's preferable over others (Exxon, Shell, BP, etc.)?

The 76 stations here have a higher cetane rating (47-48) than the other stations, so that's where I go...one in particular, in fact.
