Help! My trunk is stuck!

Help! I was putting my new license plate on when it started raining, so I closed the trunk and went inside. Now it is stuck closed!

This wouldn't be such a huge deal but in order to replace the license I had to take out the rear lights and partially remove the inner lining of the trunk. Now when I try to open the trunk it turns but doesn't pop open. I think that it is caught on something inside.

Is there any other way to open the trunk? I have a 1986 325es. Or to manually open it with a coat hanger or something? Technically without the rear lights I can't even legally drive it to a repair shop.

Nevermind

I managed to get it open by trying the lock about 50 times. I guess that it needs some lube in the locking mechanism. Oh well, I got all the lights back so even if it doesn't open it's not a big deal.

I'll have it looked at the next time that I take it in.

check the 2 bolts for the actuator under the lining. they're kinda sensitive. i put a keyless lock thing in my car and i had to remove the actuator to get to the wires and i had to play with the tightness of the bolts on the actuator to get it to work right.

Smile How difficult was it to install the keyless lock?

E30-325 thanks for the encouragement, but I'm a dudette lol.

1991318i, where did you find the keyless lock? Did you install it yourself? I was thinking about getting one eventually. The locks are kind of funny and the driver's side won't lock at all. I have to use the trunk to lock it lol.

I just took it in for a diagnostic and the mechanic put some lube in the lock or something because it doesn't get stuck now! Yay!

The reason your locks are acting up is usually the key is getting worn out from use and/or the tumblers in the locks are getting worn out from lots of use. I had this with my E30 recently plus the two front doorlocks had been damaged in attempted breakins!. You need to first get a new key cut then you need to remove all of the locks involved; trunk, doors and maybe ignition and fuelcap.
Then you take the locks apart and remove the barrel assembly which has the brass tumblers inside. With the key inserted in the barrel, the spring loaded tumblers should all be flush with the barrel surface so that when the key is turned the barrel can rotate. If, while the key is inserted, you see some of the flat brass tumblers protuding...you need to file them down flush with the barrel...this is what is causing the problem. A bit of oil and re-assembly the locks and they should work fine.
Otherwise...remove the locks and take them to a Locksmith and he will sort them out for you!
