Oil level low

What type of oil is best for a 2009 750i? My idrive is saying that oil level is at minimum. I was thinking of using Castrol Edge 5W-30. Any thoughts.

Just take it to the BMW dealer. Yes this is technically not a part of "free maintenance" but they should top off the oil gratis. Otherwise Castrol Edge 5W-30 should be ok, BMW recommends Castrol and I would assume that or another Castrol oil is what BMW dealers would use.

At 3,000 miles, I also got the warning message that engine was a quart low. The service department added a quart gratis in under 5 mintues.

Me Too

I have a '09 750i I bought new in late September. I got the message at around the same mileage, and then another about 4000 miles later (I put on over 1100 mi/mo). My dealer has a box of oil in the service drive in, and they just hand it out like it was water. The service rep said to expect the oil consumption to stop somewhere around 20000 miles. I hope he's right. He gave me a quart to take home for the next time so I didn't have to come in again.

I also got the message 'at minimum' around 4000 miles on my 2009 750Li. Unfortunately I was at home on the farm, about 15 miles from the dealer. First, I tried to check the oil--no dipstick!! So being a reasonable kinda guy, I read the manual--and found out that they didn't forget to put one on my car. The owner's manual also told me how to check the oil from the inside of the car utilizing the i-drive--it said the engine had to be warm, driven for about 15 miles or so. As I had just driven the car 30 miles, I attempted to check the oil. It wouldn't do anything--I waited over five minutes for the reading to come back to me. Unfortunately, the sequence of events went like this: drive car for 30 miles, pull in driveway and get 'oil at minimum' message, shut off engine to check oil, find no dipstick, learn how to do it the easy way from manual, cannot get any reading!

So there I am, with a brand new high dollar car that appears to be using oil at a rather accelerated rate, 15 miles from the dealership, unable to verify the level at all. I'm getting a little irritated. Now I have tractors, trucks, lawn mowers etc, and a lot of cheap oil, but no Castrol (the oil I used in both my 911's--long since sold). So I made the only intelligent choice I could. I topped the 750 off with lawnmower oil, drove into the dealership (during which drive I learned that the 750 has a ticker that must register 15 miles or so, before it will let the automatic oil level checker check the oil) and told them it was on them--they could change the oil to get rid of the cheap stuff, or acknowledge my admission of guild (the only choice I could make) and be prepared to cover the engine seizing up!!

They laughed and told me all would be okay--just drive. I did and I am!!
