Summer Wheels going on, tar wont come off

Im prepping my summer v710s for use and want to get some road tar off that has sit on the wheels through the winter. Bug and Tar remover wont take it off. I have a bottle of goof off sitting here ready to go at them. I already tested an inside area and it worked great with no apparent damage to the paint. I immediately washed the area with dish soap and water. Should i continue use or get something less harmful? i have to get this done today and the local autozone only had the bug and tar that didnt work... thanks guys

There are lots of things which will remove the tar, but most of them (WD-40, Goo Gone and similar products) have solvents which *may* dull the finish, so always try it on a hidden area first. Ronsonal lighter fluid is almost pure Naptha, and is an excellent solvent that evaporates super fast....

the tar is on the recessed and inside areas of the wheels and not on the outer face. so if any finish is harmed it wont be very noticeable. still i dont want to damage any part of the finish. the tested area seemed ok. any one else have experience using Goof Off on their wheels?

I would skip the goof-off . It's seriously toxic stuff and will destroy paint if it gets near it . I use a citrus based degreaser (finish line or Pedros ) to clean tar off carbon fiber bicycles . It works perfectly and has no affect on the finish . It's available at any good bike shop and similar stuff is probably available at any hardware store.

I used Goof Off on my paint to remove the gooey adhesive left over from removing my clear bra. It didn't harm my paint what so ever so you should be fine to use it on your wheels.

I have used goof-off to remove adhesive residue from the inner barrrels of my wheels. It's powerful, but it works. I also keep citrus degreaser in the cabinet, but rather than buying the $10 16 oz bottle from my local bike shop, I just get the $10 gallon-size jugs from Home Depot. They're in with the janitorial supplies. (edit: I also give my Campagnolo stuff a bath in the citrus degreaser a couple of times a year - a clean drivetrain is a happy drivetrain)

edit: A friend of mine is starting up a mobile wheel repair business. He was in my neighborhood yesterday and I hadn't seen his trailer/workshop yet, so I went over to check it out. He was in the area to straighten a bent wheel. He cleaned the barrel of the damaged wheel using lacquer thinner and a nylon scraper.

Try simple green. Very good stuff. I use it on my wheels and it didnt hurt the finish but idk about v710. You will have to wax the wheel after you use it though. It tends to "dry" it up.

I use petrol. Not for my bra you understand, for the tar. No residual damage to laquer or paint.

The bulk alloy wheel cleaner used by detailers are powerful stuff and they are friendly to the wheel paint.

i tried the goof off and it still didnt get the little specs of tar off. i scraped them with my finger nail while rubbing and some came off but the majority is still baked on there pretty good.

i only had these wheels for one season so far and treated them with 3 coats of rejex when i first got them and continued to clean them weekly. but i made the mistake of not thoroughly cleaning them before their winter hibernation. i also stored them outside so they were exposed to very cold temps which probably added to the degree that which the tar is stuck on.

Try the Ronsonal....

Goo Gone, WD40 or mineral spirits will take the tar of as long as you let it dwell on the surface for a while

You need to let it soak in. I use 3M Adhesive Remover to get the gunk from wheel weights off. I saturate a rag, then saturate the gunk and let it sit for a few minutes, then it rubs off with very little effort.

Have you tried Stoners Tarminator? Same deal tho, has to soak for a few minutes for it to work.

If it's actually tar, warming it up will make it much easier to clean off regardless of the solvent you choose. Leave the wheels in the sun or warm up the tar with a heat gun or hair dryer. But remember many of these solvents are flammable.
