Exclamation Brakes?

So I own a 2007 328xi (74,000mi). Recently have been hearing a slight metal "scratching" or "Rubbing" noise when braking. However the computer says the brakes have several thousand more miles before needing to be checked (for both the front and back brakes). The scratching sound is only noticeable when braking to a stop.

Might I still need to replace the brake pads?

i also heard a very loud scratching noise for about 5 seconds one time when reversing out of a parking lot.... in the middle of a 2 hour trip. Not sure if this is related to the above situation.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Take your wheels off and check between the dust shield and rotor for rocks or other debris. There can also be debris stuck between your pads and rotors. Look for score marks on the rotor, front and back.

Could be the dust, or could be the pads. At times pads, crystallize causing those type of noises.

There is no substitute for getting in there and visually checking the pads - both inner and outer - YOURSELF. Computers can get confused. Or lie.

Yes, also check for rocks stuck in the calipers, bent dust shields, etc.

Exclamation Brake inspection required

Take an hour to inspect all 4 brake calipers / discs and pads. A timely inspection might let you avoid brake disc damage from word out pads and save you a few hundred $$$s in add'l replacement parts.

Yes, the OBS estimates the time remaining on your disk pads. My computer says 5000 kms but I know that it is not based on the actual condition of the pads. Usually, when you hear a scratching sound when braking you should get a warning on the screen. If you are not, then the brakes need to be looked at for sure.
