It doesn't take much money for the basics and I get my metal from scrap yards. My father in law has a power hammer which makes the work easier and faster. He picked his up for $150 because it was destined for the scrap yard due to it's age and lack of safety devices. A decent anvil (minimum 150lbs) can run to $500 but if you are patient and keep looking you can find one for less than $100. Furnace prices vary widely. It depends if you want gas or coal fired, it's age, condition,and size. I don't make anything too big so I have a small forge. Overall, if you wanted to start blacksmithing tomorrow, you can expect to spend at least $1500 but I have less than a third of that because I waited till a deal came along to slowly build my tool base. It's a very satisfying hobby.
