Not worth 200 bucks a year to me.

If they keep adding stuff like this to BMW Search, it may be worth $200 someday.

Is BMW search part of nav? I do have premium package and therefor BMW assist, but I could not find a BMW search option anywhere (I do not have tech package).

It's part of the Convenience Plan which is $199 per year subscription. See here:

If one's primary rationale for plunking down $200/year for the BMW Assist Convenience Plan is to get a CNN feed on your Nav screen, I'd propose the $200/year would be better spent towards supporting your local broadcast of NPR.

I went out to the car and I now have it and I have not paid the 199 bucks. Sweet! I thought you have to have the extra plan. All I did was let the car update by listening to concierge information from the assist menu. During that time data was transmitting. Said no to purchase then went out of assist and back in and BMW search was active! Then my buddy did the same on his 135 and his is now active. So for free, it's cool.

BMW search features are indeed cool (although I'd love to see a weather map added)
Spoke with my CA today who was as surprised as I was that it BMW search is working.
But can anyone confirm whether this is in fact supposed to be free? Will it stay that way?

Both our X5 and our 535 have this feature working. After seeing this thread yesterday, went out to the vehicles and tried it...and Guessing just an upgrade to the BMW assist program.....we are not subscribers to the $200 optional plan. The weather map would be a fantastic upgrade as well.....but I love what they have done. The fuel search is great.

So, if you really don't need to have paid for the Convenience plan to have this function, it should be just part of the tech/nav package and not BMW Assist, because once again, I do have BMW Assist as part of the premium package, but don't have tech and I cannot find a BMW search function anywhere in iDrive. Am I missing something here?

I tried it on my X5 35d with no luck, I have BMW Assist but not enrolled in to the $199 plan. Went through the Concierge Call and declined the service as mentioned above but did not see a Search option after the call. Would really love to find out the exact steps twssas, David1 and others that got it working without signing up.I dont have the technology/nav pkg but have BMW Assist.

Navigation is required for BMW Search as specified under BMW Assist Convenience Plan.

I tried it today on my X5 with tech / premium package. it worked and didn't pay the 199 or 200 service fee.
did you also see the email capabilities of emailing someone your exact location along your intended route. thought that was pretty cool.

Sounds like they inadvertently did what some new TV channels do to hook you. They should have left it on for a week or two and then removed it as a sort of "preview" . I know someone who bought a used Bimmer and never knew about BMW Assist. He found out about it shortly after his car was stolen, He would have been happy to spend the $200 per year.

Considering how stolen cars are treated, it often works out better to never see it again and get the insurance cash instead.

Of course, if you are upside-down on a car loan, that doesn't work as well...

Tried connecting to the BMW Assist again this afternoon.......and I get a message "system not available, please try later"

So don't know if that means it is turned off....is indeed busy.......isn't free......etc.

Will try again later......

They turned it off. It was on by mistake. I had it for a few hours and miss it. Now that $199 is burning a hole in my pocket.

You see! If there are any BMW Marketing wizards trolling these forums, provide a limited time preview window for free and you may get some new subscribers. When you consider you don't need to pay for AAA or CAA because this service is included (pretty much), it's not that bad of an investment.

If they include weather/radar, I would probably pay the $199.

It does include weather. From http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...+fYb1xucRwQ==:

BMW Search allows online access to up-to-date fuel prices, news, weather conditions and forecasts, the latest DOW, S&P 500 and NASDAQ indices from Bloomberg, and the powerful reach of the Google Maps database – delivered on the Control Display right inside your vehicle.

With automatic transfer of your current location and destination, you can compare gas stations' pricing along the way or quickly find a desired business with just a key word. Then, with a simple menu option selection, you can start route guidance or a call on your Bluetooth® linked phone to reach your desired destination. Weather conditions and three day forecasts are available for the entire United States. Stay informed with US, world, sports, business and BMW headlines.

Pinpoint your current location and destination and send it to a smartphone or e-mail account with Send to Mail.

Available exclusively to Convenience Plan subscribers on BMW Assist and Navigation system-equipped 2009 and later Z4, 1, 3 and 7 Series and 2010 and later X5, X6, 5 and 6 Series.

Oh and the CNN is gone, even for those who pay for the service. BMW said they were just testing the service, and it's not yet ready for release.
