Gary/Anyone: OEM Conti's Discontinued!?!?

You might remember a few days ago that I posted about picking up a nail in my driver's rear which tore the tire in such a way that it could not be patched. Well, after some deliberation, I decided to just buy a single matching Conti and place it on the rear.

I dropped off my wheel at a local Town Fair Tire (sorry Gary, they promised it the next morning...) and thought all would be well. Well, a week and a half later, they finally told me it was ready, so I dropped by to pick it up last night. Looking at the wheel, I first noticed the ding they put on the surface. Then I noticed the tire looked different than the rest of mine. Come to find out, they mounted a ContiSportContact 2 instead of the OEM ContiSportContact.

The last thing I want is two different tread patterns on my drive wheels. It's bad enough that I'll have different tread depths. Anyway, he calls Conti directly and gets some woman who has no information on the OEM tires. Then he called someone at Tire Rack and was told they are so far backordered, that I'd be "better off" just buying 4 new tires of a different model/brand. Sure... as long as someone will sell me 4 tires for the price of 1! Sheesh.

So anyway... all this and my real complaint is:

WTF is this that I have a <1 year old car and I can't even buy replacement tires for it!?!?

Not discontinued, but backordered with no ETA. Annoying, I agree. Unfortunately this tends to happen from time to time in the tire industry...

BMW of West Springfield had one, that's ONE, tire left in the correct size. Guess I got lucky. I didn't want to replace the whole set because of one nail. Unfortunately, the dealership charges about $20-30 more for the same tire than is listed on Tire Rack.

Eric,

I have 4 "used" OEM Conti's with 9000 miles on them and nothing wrong with the rears. If you want, you can have them for free. I need to clean out the basement. Have them road-force checked and if you like them, great!

I don't think shipping would cost that much.

I had the same problem finding Contis for the rear axle in prep for a track day. NTB had a few in stock, and were willing to come close to TireRack's price. You might give that a shot.

Thanks for the offer though.

And I have one front Conti in sitting in my basement. I'd part with it CHEAP. Don't ask why I have just one.

Hmm, well... my wheel/tire wasn't ready after work. No big deal, I told them I wasn't in a rush. So perhaps I still have a chance to take advantage of one of your offers after all. Perhaps I can just get the dealership to mount it for me, as the local tire shop seems to ding or scratch my wheels by just looking at them.

Please let me know what you'd like for the tire (to sell me and/or shipping cost.) It would be shipped to Southwick MA, 01077. I'm interested in just the rear (245/40-17) to replace the damaged tire, or the entire set if it's cheap enough.

Post here, IM or email me please. Thanks.

The problem with that is it is an unexpected "repair". Buying one tire is bad enough, but two gets real tough when you're in the middle of having a house built and you've committed 110% of your resources to that.

Besides, if I start replacing more than 1 tire, I'd rather have Toyo Proxes TS-1's.
