Auto Headlights Always On?

Hi
When I turn the lights to auto (A position) they are always on. This is not down to current light conditions, they are on, permanently just the same as turning the switch the other way to the 'on' position.
Is there an adjustment for the sensitivity?
Can auto lights be turned on/off by dealer?
Could the sensor be broken?
Does my model actually have auto lights? I'm guessing so or it wouldn't have the A position?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
I have UK model Sep 2006 520d Auto

Maybe they are the daytime running lights.
Yes, the dealer can adjust the sensitivity - for fee.

On my MY2007 530Xi there are three positions for the headlight switch:
Rightmost is always ON
Center, Always OFF
Left, Auto

There could be a defective sensor, etc.
Have you looked in the manual for your car?

Good luck. and, welcome!

Not sure about the '06, but in mine you can turn off the day time running lights via iDrive unedr settings, lighting, daytime running lights. If selected, the lights will remain on in position 0, 1, or 3.

If you've had a windshield replaced, it's possible the sensor was not re-installed properly.
If its not aligned perfectly with the little hole on the windshield, the sensor will always think it's darker than it is, and your lights will stay on.

In my 2008 535i, there's a little LED light next to the Auto setting on the headlight dial. When the headlights are fully on, the LED lights up, but if only the running lights are on (which I think would just be the angel eyes), then the LED is off.

I'm pretty sure that's the light sensor.
That's a photo just after I had my windshield replaced, and my lights stayed on all the time.
Sensor replaced....Problem solved. You can clearly see in the pic that it is slightly misaligned.

I could be wrong, though.

Was there ever a solution for this problem? I am having the exact same problem with my e60 M5. When turned to the leftmost position 3 for Auto Headlamp, my headlight would be on all the time regardless of daylight. It's not the DRL as I've shut it off. Thanks.

That windshield is supposed to be ordered with the RLS already attached (it is a seperate part number). There is no "hole" for it to line up with as far as I know. What happens I think is dealers or glass repair companies get the wrong windshield then try to attach the old sensor to it and they leave an "air bubble" in there because applying it properly is so difficult.

If you have HUD it is even more important to watch what is ordered for you - You need the special HUD and RLS windshield part nbr.
