Cooling System Fans

I tried looking on the internet to find out if my e36 1996 318i is meant to have a second fan installed. i have seen various pictures showing them with and without. i am wanting to look after this baby and want to make sure when i am carrying out a full cooling system overhaul that if this is need i will install it as well.

When motor is running the fan that is currently in it will only work when the aircon has been turn on inside the car. the car has done a drive of about 2800kms since i have brought it and run well. but needing to do this drive again but one way 1400km. cooling worked well on the last drive and never moved passed the half way mark on the temp guage. Anybody got ideas for more tests I can run to pin down the problem?

thats probably your aux only run if your AC is on, or you go over the high temp trip should have a belt driven fan that will eventually break and destroy your cooling system...all kinds of fun
