E46 White smoke from the exhaust

Is it normal for an 2001 BMW 325i to produce light white smoke (Almost transparent) from the exhaust? Especially when you turn the car for the first time (The engine is still cold).

It's probably steam from the condensation inside the exhaust system.

Yeap seems normal, it's caused mostly by cold weather or/and cold start, heat it up normaly, and observe if the "white smoke" becomse more transparent. You can ask a friend to tap the acceleration pedal for a short period of 10-20 seconds and observe the smoke... in seasons when the temperature varies from 5- below 0 Celsius, you might see some drops of liquid don't worry that is just water melting in the exhaust system... heat the car well and that too will go away!

In this case unless it has a very sweet smell, i guess almost like burned sweet tea, then you should be alright. (present of a busted head gasket or similar.)
I dont know why either but for some reason mine did it more before I changed the O2 sensors , yeah, not sure, uneven burn shouldnt mean condensation from a clean burn... maybe just a coincidence of temperatures...

If i am not mistaken, I believe that white smoke means that the College of Cardinals has selected a new Pope. All the more fitting for a German car to be selecting a German Pope.
Sorry...but i couldn't resist.

Mine just did this same thing today at 7:30 am and Im in Arizona and its hot here. My buddy thinks that I had a bad tank of gas but I usually go to Chevron and Im always putting in super all the time. I hope it isnt a sign of a head gasket if it is the car is going.

Head gaskets don`t "go" as matter-of-factly as say, VANOS seals or CVV (which are sure bets for failure somewhere down the line)....it`s usually precipitated by overheating, brought on by a failed component in the cooling system (a good reason to rebuild your cooling system NOW if it hasn`t already been done)

I just did the water pump and had the coolant changed when I had to have my engine mounts replaced. The coolant level is fine and the dipstick didnt have any weird colors it actually looked really clean. One of the shops I call said it may be the Crankcase Valve? the one with 4 hoses and that its gonna cost between 300-480 bucks.

Defintely could be CVV. Had the same issue last winter and then started getting the goose honk sound after the enging shut off. Replaced CVV and hoses 3 months ago and no issues since though I have not been through the winter with the new CVV.

if there is no honk noise after engine shut off, then CVV is good? I'm getting a weird honk noise and i have big cloud of white smoke after a few seconds. It goes away though

Yup, most likely bad CVV. Have you had it scanned for codes?

I'm getting no codes. I changed my CVV about a year ago. It does make a weird honk noise everytime i shut off my engine. I do hope it's CVV and not a head gasket.

I'd say it is almost assuredly the CVV. Your head gasket will only let go if you overheat it, otherwise these engines are pretty bulletproof.

That is indeed the hairpin in Canada. I'm sitting in the fourth row on the right hand side. Our seats ( we've had them for 3 years now) are about 15 feet from the edge of the track. Close enough to clearly see the drivers hands on the wheel. I think that picture came off Fernando Alonso's website.

I have been attending since 1982, about 15 times so far. I have the next generation with me now, my 24 YO son. This will be his 5th race in 2012. We sit in Sec. 24 one row off the rail.

Photos of us in our grandstand, race start in the rain and the amazing finish.

My first Canadian GP was 2004. We sat in section 24 the first two times. Then one year over the Senna Turn, then the end of the hairpin (too far from the track) and then we got these seats and we're never giving them up. For 2013, we're doing Canada and NJ. The track at Port Imperial is about 45 minutes from home. As soon as I can get a layout, you know I'm going to drive it.

If you come to NJ, after race barbeque at my house. All are invited.

BTW, if you look at your post race pic, there are some guys standing on the steps at the right of the low grandstand; pretty sure that's me in the red jacket.

Very cool. 2011 was a long wet race day but I will remember it as one of the best races I saw in Montreal. NJ looks fantastic, hopefully there will good access to Hotels as Montreal, as you know, is crazy during F!.
