I think "knowing it's there when you need it" is part of the appeal of the 550i. Chrischeung's point on the status department is on the money: for some who want to show status, this means 550 numbers on the trunk. I might add, that for others who don't want to boast as much, it means 535 numbers on the trunk. Entirely personal choice on the numbers.
I always wanted the biggest engine as so many cars were underpowered previously for me. Now, they got the engine technology so good, the inline 6 is more powerful than previous v8's and gets better gas mileage than my E46 330i. There is sure some elegance here. |

Meanwhile real world average driving speeds decrease due to congestion and road deterioration. Something will eventually give.

I did the Ultimate driving thing today. IMO, the *50 is a tad, just a tad, better than the *35. At least once you up the *35 to the full *50 complement.
No mistake, I loved the 35, and do love my own 35, but there was juuuuust a little bit extra. Personally, I would go with the *35. It does it all. And, when setting up the *50 to drive, I did notice the 12.5 MPG on the dash. Yeah, I know, the Ultimate people mash the heck outta them things. ![]() But, personally, as a frugal sort of fellow, I am looking at my next 5 being a 535, with the HUD, the active suspension, and a few other bits. (BTW, I was extreeeeeemly disappointed in the MB. Not only did it have no torque, it had a freakin' windowshade over the sunroof!)

No, compared to my E60s - 2006 530i, 2007 530i, 2008 535i. My 335i comvertible isn't getting here until next week. I'll replace it with a F10 early in 2011.
The dash material grade is the same/similar to the E69. Negative areas are some of the switches (eg. temp control between the vents), door pulls (cheap plastic vs wrapped material), plastic metal strips (in and out). Some of the tinniness may be down to early production build for these cars, and they may tighten the tolerances a little down the line. The material quality will take a step up (like on the E60) with the LCI in a few years I expect.

Im not knocking the 6 in any way. IMHO BMW has always made the best 6 cylinder engines. As a matter fact while attending my second Ultimate Drive Event this past Wednesday someone was testing a 335is - that freaking thing is as visceral as it gets! Whoever was test driving it dropped down a couple of gears to pass a slower car the exhaust note is incredible, and I'm sure the acceleration is impressive as well. I went looking to drive it when I we got back to the dealership. Unfortunately for me the guy that was driving it, was also the guy that was buying it . It only took the one drive for him to be sold. Based on what I saw heard, I am contemplating a 335is coupe or demo M3 (last of the N/A M3's I hear) in addition to my GT. Chris, the Bay Area aint like it used to be. 25 years back we used to be able to run 101 South from SF to San Jose pretty hard. Now you probably can open up on 280 for a spell..but we all know that CHP still likes to camp out along that route Here in SoFla people don't give a damn they will not allow you to merge, even the big rigs run a constant 80 on the interstate, for me, its equal parts safety and luxury. So the V8 for this heavy vehicle was my "only" choice.

A few Bay area people..... Highway 17 road warrior here. It's all about car handling and survival, and 535i is best for me. Today, disaster struck with big-rig crash - wish I had GPS/NAV as I had to cut through confusing back mountain roads. Made it to coast, 85F. Forecast is for 95F Sunday! yipee!

No disrepect to my BMW brotherns; however, who buys BMWs to drive around town?
If you want just kick ass power then 550i (I am picking mine up on July 7) |

I know it's not available quite yet, but how about a conceptual comparison between a 550i and a 535i with Dinan S1 package to equalize the price? Currently, Dinan gets 384hp/421 ft-lbs with the N54 engine, so with the assumption that the modified N55 would obtain similar performance, the 535 would be lighter and potentially have the sweet combination of being faster and more fuel efficient. Thoughts?
