Look at Victorinox Swiss Army. They are not expensive, very dependable, durable, and have a second hand. A good watch for work at the hospital.

Not sure why I can not link the exact watches from ShopNBC, but go there and then Womens watches $150-$399.

Getting this for my wife. She likes chrono-style and bright colors: http://images******nbc.com/is/image/ShopNBC/j179469?DefaultImage=1&$350x350_jpg$

Finally... Since you mention GPS and running: Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS-Enabled Personal Trainer w/ Heart Monitor - U106946

I'm sort of an anti-watch person (hate wearing most of them), but finally settled on a titanium and leather model from Boccia. It's a value oriented line owned by an old German company named Tutima.

I like this one as some sort of statement against the ridiculously over-sized and complex timepieces that are standard fare for men. Titanium makes it fairly light, and not as cold to the touch as steel. Also hate metal bands as they all seem to pinch, snag and pull hairs off, and this comes in a leather band.

$120, very comparable to anything from Victorinox if anyone is afraid of the price.

Got it from http://www.teno.com/

They also have some ultra clean modern stuff if you're into that with the TeNo line.

Fuz,

I really like the look of that.
Titanium millwork (not plated) and sapphire or mineral crystal is a win.

The GMT model is also quite fetching.

I'd have to go for the selfwinding movement though over quartz

Here's a good woman's model:

It's got the mandatory color and the brand name is instantly recognizable

They have quite a lineup of women's models, but I don't know your preferences. I'd rather not just spam images.

LMAO! I just know that a watch is something I know NOTHING about. ....I love the advice and guidance y'all have given me, it's helped guide me in the right direction. I don't know what kind of things I should look for in a decent watch. I know my price range is on the low side, but I figured you guys/gals could help point me in the right direction!

It's simple, really - if you NEED it as a source of telling you time, a cheap Casio/Citizen/Seiko model will be just as precise (if not more) as any "expensive" model (not to mention additional functions such as automatic time setting using radio signal and/or a solar-powered rechargeable batteries, which you won't find in overpriced junk like Rolex/Tag Heuer/Omega/Cartier/etc.). If you want a "good looking piece of jewelry" - anything "flashy-looking" is ok regardless of its price

i've liked bulova pretty well, but they've recently come out with the Precisionist line of watches. the movement is quite interesting. non mechanical, but moves like it is via newly inplemented quartz technology. you will want to take a look at these. since they came out, they have added quite a few new styles and will likely have a more vast range. they arent too expensive either. i'm thinking of buying one. they sort of remind me of Armani Exchange watches i see my friends wear, but nicer. here's a few i thought were attractive.

oh and got a watch box for christmas. need some new watches to fill it up with.

can someone explain what a quartz watch is? It's not powred by bettery. is it worse or better?

Exhubster bought his Tag when he hinished grad school (like 20yrs ago), and he still wears it every day...loves it. Maybe if I spend a little more I can have a watch that's decent enough to wear forever. I went and looked at super cheap watches and I just cant do it. (I know it sounds snobby, I swear I'm not like that... I don't need anything flashy, but I figure if I spend a little more, I can have something to wear for a long time to come...that I like.enjoy) Something I can wear every day, but that's nice.

any opinions on:
http://www.amazon.com/TAG-Heuer-Wome...9419390&sr=1-1

...reading the reviews, I guess it's only coated in stainless steal, it's nickel. That kind of sucks. ...and what's the deal with the battery, the quartz losing time. The amazon reviews scare me. Ha.

revised budget... $1,000. ...I wanted that to go towards new wheels for my bicycle ($3,800), but I think a watch may be more useful. ...and the wheels I may be able to get for christmas or birthday.

A quartz clock is a clock that uses an electronic oscillator that is regulated by a quartz crystal to keep time. This crystal oscillator creates a signal with very precise frequency, so that quartz clocks are at least an order of magnitude more accurate than good mechanical clocks. (from Wiki, too lazy on this rainy day to describe it myself )

I personally prefer mechanical watches, especially automatic ones, because they are like a living tiny machine - what can I say, I am a gearhead. A quartz watch will almost never require any maintenance outside of battery replacement every so often. A full mechanical watch will require a cleaning and lubrication on some regular basis (~5 yrs).

Bottom line is that a quartz is more accurate, but a mechanical watch is more like a crafted labor of love.

Actually, it is.

Oh, and those reviews at Amazon are hilarious. A $1000 watch which has a cheap nickel wristband and and a crown that falls off after 2 weeks? Sounds like typical "overpriced swiss watch"

The last two watches I gave to the wife are Citizen Eco-Drive watches. No batteries to replace and they're very accurate. She loves them. http://www.citizenwatch.com/

This is the latest addition to my collection. No batteries or adjustments needed (atomic & solar powered), just wear it and forget it.

I went looking yesterday...
I've got it down to three. What do you guys think about the one w gold on it too? I don't wear much gold, but if I ever do, it would work Generally I'm pretty simple, I have a right hand ring that's been in the family for forever, set in platinum... watch goes on my right hand too. (though lots of time i wear the ring on my left hand b/c it seems to fit/feel better, but I don't want ppl to think I'm married LMAO)

I liked the one w diamonds in it too, but maybe it's too 'sparkley' ...not sure...

two toned

pink sparkley

This is just looks nice to me, not anything fancy... looks simple, but in a good way

I'd personally steer clear of the pink one, however I am a one watch kinda gal. If you like lots to go with different outfits than the pink is super cute

This is very similar to mine (mine is 9 years old and doesn't have the hash marks around the dial)
