2011 X5 Hitch & Trim

The 2011 X5 Trim/Moulding for the new hitches are in, at least at my dealership. They are finishing up mine this week. Will take an hour. I'll take some pics once everything is finished and post here. So far the hitch is fantastic and regardless of what type of car I have down the road I will never go back to a roof mounted bike rack again. My rack/hitch is awesome. 110% better than any roof mounted rack. More to follow!

How so? It limits your ability to access the cargo space in the back. That is a big downer for me.

Rear 2011 X5 Hitch

Actually the bike hitch mount I got is incredibly easy to get into the back. I went with the Yakima Holdup. Its light, easy to install and it tilts back with 2 bikes on the back. Easy to get into the back, no problems at all. Rear door doesnt even come close to touching the bikes when tilted back. Its a fantastic system and I would highly recommend it. I went with Yakima but I know Thule makes a similary hitch system. Yakima also comes with a locking cable which is part of the rack. The bikes are a snap to load and unload and solid as hell back there. Was doing well over 100mph and they didnt flinch. This rack in the back produces zero windnoise and its nothing short of fantastic. Love it. I had roof mounted systems for years and you couldnt pay me to go back to that setup. Especially now with the X5. Too high up. This system is really one of the best investments I've made, next to the car of course!

Is it user friendly for a dog owner? Can a dog jump in the back? I guess there were two main reasons why I went with a roof system. #1 I am a big skier and love the cargo box for the skis. #2 my dog has to get in the back and that additional hardware back there would not be helpful. Clearly there are two systems for different needs. Neither way is right or wrong except for the individual user.

they make a hitch mount rack on a hinge/pivot so it swings away from the car.

very cool... keep us updated on the hitch and bike rack. I am looking for a system like that myself. How much are you paying for the hitch and installation, and the bike rack? Some pictures would be nice, my only concern is I don't want to mess up my good looking x5 from cutting a patch open for the hitch.

Rack

You can totally get a dog to jump in the back when the bikes are tilted back. My lab had zero problems getting in! Yakima makes a rack called the Swing Daddy which I almost bought. Like you said, it swings out and away from the car. I didnt go with it because its heavy. Almost a rack you basically leave on the car. It also can carry up to 4 bikes which I didnt need. The bikes basically hang from two bars and you strap them down. I found the bikes can swing alot on the rack and damage the bike. I only needed to carry 2 bikes and the the rack I got the bikes dont touch each other, are locked down into the rack and cant move.

I am happy that at least someone had their hitch installed. I am still waiting for parts. BMW Canada also telling me there is a electronics issue. Will you be able to send me information on the dealership and possibly some pictures and part numbers. Thanks.

Hitch and Trim

I STILL have not received the trim for the hitch they installed. Dealer is still telling me BWW is releasing the trim piece "end of the month", well, its the end of the month and I still have no trim! The hitch itself has been great. I havent had any problems with it nor trying to wiggle the bolts I need to screw into the hitch for my bike rack. The bumper moves around pretty easily. It still doesnt look all that bad the cut out. You almost have to be seriously looking for the cuts to think wow, that guy needs the trim piece. Whatever. I'm pressing my dealer pretty hard on this. Soon as I get some more updates on the trim I'll post.

Could we get some pictures of the rear of the X5 with the hitch installed?

Cool thanks for that pic- - its hardly noticeable- I will be interesting to see how it looks with the trim installed- once you get it. I didnt see anywhere on the bmw website where this can be installed at the factory- is this only a stealer installed item?

Doesnt look like there is enough room -may need to make the cut wider to fit the hitch pin and cable connector. I guess youll find out when you get the trim piece.
