Finally test drove my first 740

Ok, car started right up then I hear tick tack from engine. Assuming the car is cold. I drove the car ran like a champ. Did not hear any noise while on the stop sign or during accelaration. I'm thinking lifter issues. Dealer/auto broker selling it fo $8800 but desperate for sale and willing to sell for $6500. 127k miles one owner. He's trying to get the car off his books.

Anyone have an idea what this noise is? Should I take the deal?

Thanks

Sounds like a oil starvation issue... OR it sat for a long time.. Go back in a day or two unnanounced and start it again.. if I leave a car sit for a few weeks without running it all the oil drains into the pan..

If the noise is coming from near the oil filter housing, it could be part of the fuel emissions system. This is normal on start up, check valve of some sort IIRC.

if you are hearing this at idle, it is obviously not getting enough oil. if oil pressure is ok, then a flat lifter may be clogged with deposits from the oil or may just be broken and in need of replacement. i've looked at quite a few E38s with the problem of a flat lifter, this is going to prove to be an expensive job requiring the heads to be removed and everything else thats in the way. if the car is in great condition and you dont mind spending a bit of money on engine repairs, then this may be the right car. what year is it though? you will likely spend quite a bit of money on the car as long as you own it. i would try and find out what has been replaced on the car. certain parts need prove a need of replacement at or by certain mileage, like the water pump and hoses. if everything is original be prepaired for a load of repairs.
