Audi starts at a disadvantage, because their design starts with a FWD bias and there ain't no FWD car that can do what the RWD F10 5er can do. Audi's other disadvantage is that on top of the great car the 5er starts out as it will also be available in xDrive format which will give it a further advantage in the Northeast.
Sure, dynamically BMW will be ahead. But I'm not so sure this will overcome overall marketing mix and packaging advantages from Audi. I believe that in Germany, Audi is now outselling BMW - in the land of the autobahn.

My thoughts are model mix. Audi has a lot of cars that BMW hasn't been able to match directly at a similar price point. R8, S5, S4, A5 Sportback, A7 to name a few. Audi have given up trying to be better than the M3 and M5s from BMW. Instead they are positioning themselves above the regular BMW models, for not much more money, more power, with 4WD, and a bit more style. Following this vein of reasoning, the new S6 may be priced just between the 550i and 535i, using a forced V6 from the S4 - just a very wild guess. I firmly believe that the 335is is BMWs attempt at addressing the Audi S4. Will there be a 535is to match the Audi S6 - probably if the 335is is a hit? Will it be seen as exclusive as the Audi's S's?

I guess you can't argue with the hard fact that Audi is outselling BMW in many parts of the world (Germany, China, etc.) and is the fastest growing premier German auto-maker.

With the exception of R8, I believe BMW has good competitors to Audi's counterparts. The 335i/335iS competes well against the S4/S5. While there isn't an exact competition to the A5 Hatch..., er, I mean, Sportsback, there is the BMW wagon version. While not liked by everyone, BMW offers hardtop convertibles over the arguably inferior ragtop Audis.

The A7 is still a "concept" (is it really coming out as a MY2011?). You could argue that the Grand Coupe (also still a concept, rumored to come out a variant 4-door 6er) is (or could be) a strong competition.

On the flip side, Audi still doesn't have any F7 or X6 equivalent although neither will find its way to my garage anytime soon.

I like the direction that Audi is taking more and more (e.g. upcoming RS4 with NA V8 instead of an FI engine) and the one from BMW less and less (e.g. using the "M" badge as a marketing tool to peddle X5/X6 Ms).

What don't you like about it? If BMW were to continue on the path of making Ms more superlative track machines, less suitable for the road, demand would go down. When I see this, I think of Porsche's foray into the Cayenne. Wildly successful - financial wise. Won't BMW be more profitable because of this? If you don't like this, watch out. BMWs are going to get softer. Think woman. Women's salaries are growing and will continue growing faster than men's (60% of advanced degree holders are women). So their buying power is going to grow proportionally faster than the male one. For BMW not to offer appealing products to upwardly mobile women will be to neglect a hugely profitable and growing market. I think we're seeing some recognition from BMW with what is happening to M division.

And they will always make the M3 and M5 - though as you said, with FI. The honest fact is, NA is on borrowed time (say 20-30 years). FI helps fuel economy and emissions, and there is no way 99% of the public will pay a premium in price (gas guzzler taxes) and fuel consumption for NA over FI for the same power output. Plus the publicity of not being fuel efficient will be unpalatable to manufacturers.

I think what everyone is doing is great - Audi, Benz, BMW, Porsche, Lexus, Infiniti - moving in on each other's traditional markets and creating new markets. It makes better cars, gives consumers more choice, and lowers prices. Isn't there a perfect car for everyone - instead of a car that is perfect for everyone? And now, VW owns Porsche. Exciting times. What's not to like?

BMW true enthusiast are all about driving! That is the reason, I never liked outgoing 5 series as its driving dynamics along with looks were les than pleasing for me.

MBZ, LEXUS, drivers are a bit different, and they dont talk abt driving at all.

Audi has been undercutting with more affordable packaging in same class plus some prefer their looks and finishes over BMW!

I drove S4, and by all means it is a good competetar to 335i sedan.

I agree totally that Audi has stepped their game up. Most of the current quattro systems have a 40:60 rear bias to try and mimic true rear drive dynamics. Before my F07 550, I owned a 2010 Q5 Prestige Sline. Nice car, that was until I saw the F07 at the Miami Int'l Auto Show. The Q5 is a pretty dynamic vehicle- don't care for the "standard" models but the SLine version hit the right buttons appearance wise....and I am going to say this- the 2nd Gen MMI is much easier to use than even this current version of IDrive. Hell it even had paddle shifters which I don't have on my $88K F07

MBZ been there done that, although I do have to give the current AMG models their props.

As far as German marques go, If Iwasn't in a Bimmer I would likely be driving an Audi.

That brings me to my next question I wonder why there were no A6's at the Ultimate Drive Event I attended? The supercharged 3.0 has similar HP/TQ ratings to the N55.

They're using Audis up north where AWD is more popular.

Most of the buyers interested in the luxury midsize vehicles probably don't care as much about handling. To me, the new E class styling is just fine for the majority of buyers in this segment.

F10 is quite good but it will not knock out the E class.

Audi might be doing quite well outside U.S., but here, it still significantly lags MB and BMW.

That's extremely true. One thing that may prove interesting - the new A6's pricing. It looks like Euro/USD is heading to parity. This should lower BMW's F10 pricing - however, that really upsets folks who have purchased already, and savages resale. So expect half-measures, like value added packages at reduced prices, more standard equipment, and subvented leases. That goes for MB as well.

What Audi has going for it is that since they haven't launched yet, they may be able to come into the market with their new A6 at an extremely competitive price point from day 1.

So, I just got an invite to the one here in Nashville...it says something about attendees getting a valuable gift towards the purchase or lease of a new BMW model. Any idea what that is?

I also got a cap. Maybe if you wear the cap to the dealer when you buy your car, you get a discount?

Another event:
The BMW Ultimate Driving Event will take place on Saturday, Jun 19 at:

Fields BMW - Lakeland
www.fieldsbmwlakeland.com
4285 Lakeland Park Dr
Lakeland, FL 33809-3581
(863)816-1234

I received the invite via email (from BMW USA, not the individual dealer), and in the email there was a code for me to "register". Like others have suggested, you can probably call and try to get a spot.

I had the choice between "comparing the 535i vs. Lexus GS350" or "535 GT".

No word about the the "valuable gift towards the purchase or lease of a new BMW".

This reminds me the event workers said after doing the "track" comparison events they would start doing smaller events at individual dealerships.

I attended the Porsche Panamera driving event last year and all attendees received a hard bound Panamera product brochure annnnd a USB drive that looks exactly like the real keyless entry fob ,even the "functional" LED indicator mirrors the one on the actual fob. The USB drive is loaded with a Porsche Panamera Configurator with enough space for you to load your own data.

Just received one for the DC area-late July (July 26 for BMW of Arlington).

The operator was totally unclear on the format, but I think I got signed up to drive a 535GT.
It was a lot easier when they did it online for the Komen version--drop down menus to pick your cars. She was pretty unclear on offerings. No M cars, but she mentioned 7 series, but when I said I was interested she told me that was only at another event location. Then she asked if I wanted to do a comparo with an Audi. I said sure, but then she told me that was only compared with a 535i, not the 535GT, so we had to start all over again with my name/address etc.

Hmm, my invitation came in the mail, from BMWNA. It was a little tri-fold pamphlet thingy. It had some info about the Ultimate Drive, the comment about the valuable gift, and then gave me a unique ID number to use when logging on the BMWUSA website to reserve my spot. Once there, it gave me a drop down of all of the vehicles available and the corresponding time slots.

Recieved an official invite via email. The coordination is quite different from the Ultimate Drive event I attended on Sunday, May 2nd at Gulfstream Park. I guess the events are now being hosted by local dealers . Additionally, the time slots I was offered are during the week, thats not convenient for most folks. I signed up anyway for Wednesday, June 9th@ South Motors - South Miami.
