Rumored: BMW X4, a Baby X6 on the way?

I think a smaller X6 would be a great looking and driving car but where does it fit? Its more of a niche car than the X6. If BMW built an X4 would you buy it?

The success of the BMW X6 has raised the possibility of an X4 at BMW, Autocar has learned.

The giant sports-coupe/off-roader has been an unexpected success for the firm since it was launched in 2008. BMW has sold 80,000 units worldwide since its launch, which is double its initial predictions.

A BMW source revealed to Autocar that a smaller car in the same mould as the X6, likely to take the X4 name, was under consideration, but it had yet to be given the green light for production.

"We haven't made any firm decision," said our source, "however, the X6's success shows there is a continued demand for sporty off-roaders."

The X4 could be spun off the new X3's platform; that car is set to be launched later this year. It's styling could draw influence from 2001's X Coupe concept, as well as the X6.

BMW has created several niche products over the past few years, including the recently-launched X1 and 5-series GT models. The BMW Concept Gran Coupe from the Beijing motor show is tipped to be launched in 2012 as the 8-series.

No. People complain about little room in the X6 any how. So why make a smaller one? Jeeze X1, X4 - GAYY quit making un-needed cars outta the blue. Its like Audi's A7.. wtf is that, a cross between A6 and A8? All these are becoming simply retarded. Bring back the 8-Series first. The 5-Series GT is dumb, looks dumb but interior and such is awesome. I think no one will buy the X1 nor X4, keep it to its basics. X3 is smallest, X5 is just right in the middle, and X6 is them together and more. What is the X1 or X4 going to offer? Probably nothing.

Off Roader...are they smoking too much schnitzel? They can't even climb a hill (see Top Gear 14th season finale). I'm shocked the X6 sold 80K units. Don't expect it to last as soon as the novelty wears off. I can't imagine anyone paying over 50K for an X4 that has the same room as a compact sedan, hogs gas, doesn't climb hills, and looks FUGLY.

That is what they said about the X5 when it came out. They were wrong then too.

Wake up people, cross overs are all over the market is various shapes, sizes and price ranges. This is not a fluke.

I see that you own a X6 so please don't take offense. But the X5 is no X6. The X5 has a role and has some utility. The X6 is a sports car on stilts. Still makes no sense to me or even the people I have talked to who own one!

Not all vehicles are purchased for function, fitness, affordability, or beauty. Some people just want something different, unique, or exclusive. Looking back, how many BMW enthusiats envisioned an X5 before it came out? When it did...how many thought it would proliferate as it has?

True, which is why people bought the X6. But when you start getting into "lower" price ranges, the target audience has less to spend on cars that don't make sense (even if they really want one). That's why I'm curious (or baffled) how BMW market research would actually think an X4 would be a good idea.
