I need advise from 2004-newer owners....

I am hopping to get some feedback from current and previous 645Ci owners. After Driving a SUV for the past few years, I am looking into replacing it with a sportier vehicle. The 645CI is one of the cars on my short list but I am having some issues finding maintenance/reliability information on it.
I came across another post that claimed oil changes to be around $500.00. Later, I understood that to be for "oil service". What does the "oil service" involve and how often does it need to be done? How reliable is this vehicle?

Any major know issues? any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated.

I drive around 12,000km (7500 miles) per year

You sound to be in the same scenario that I was in a few months back... had a few SUVs over the course of a few years until I finally decided that I could probably survive just fine without an SUV in the garage -- and that I had been without an enjoyable vehicle for far too long.

I happened across a parking lot and picked up my 645 on Impulse. I did a couple days of reading before buying and found that maintenance on the 6 series is very expensive. Some have gremlins that can be difficult to diagnose, and expensive to repair. Based upon that information, I bargained with the dealer and got 24 month, 24,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty included with the purchase, and drove off the lot with it.

The warranty has already paid for itself 2 months later after a would-have-been spendy trip to the dealer to replace a few electronics that were damaged due to some water drainage problems.

I've been extremely happy with the car so far, even without the extra power the 650 has... although I have already begun talking myself into the possibility of finding a gently used M6 next year. As fun as the car is, I'm a "grass is greener" person so I can't help but think of how much MORE fun the M version would be with 500hp.

I'd highly recommend buying from a BMW dealer or at least taking any prospective purchase to one for a paid inspection before buying. If it's out of warranty, DEFINITELY seek an extended warranty plan, or plan on saving a few thousand in the bank for if/when something goes wrong.

And to add, the oil service is an oil change and it definitely is expensive compared to the norm. I have also seen as high as $500, however, I've heard many dealers are less. The only plus side to that is that its once every 15,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.

Getting the warranty and (if you can) maintenance plan is important, as maintenance can be expensive. Seeing as a 2004 is either out of warranty now (or will be soon - mine is up in August) you probably should be looking at a 2006.

TopDownInFL, what are you planning on doing once your warranty runs out?

Well Ive done several oil changes and the most it has cost was 140.00. IF you don't want the light reset it's 85 bucks. Also depending on the mileage on the car the original brakes will need to be replaced around 70000 miles and its about a 1800.00 job. Luckily I cant say Ive had any major issues. My car has 83000 miles on it now so once it gets closer to 100k and the CPO is over, I will probably end up trading her in for a 650 or better yet an M6.

I concur with those here who have recommended purchasing a service plan if you're considering a 6 that is out of its service warranty. Also, tyres for our cars range $400 -$500 a-piece. Someone here mentioned "gremlins" and, having owned a 645Cic, 650i, and now an M6, I would say that the earlier models may have had some glitches with the iDrive and convertible top sensors. Not so much with later models.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide.

Looking into it now. Going to go with something through the dealership specifically so I know when I bring it there if/when something goes tremendously wrong, they will take care of it in short order. IMHO, an extended warranty in the case of the 6 should most definitely NOT be about paying the least possible (and I obviously don't want to pay the most either) but about the coverage for a reasonale price.

I'll be sure to post my options when I've completed collecting some info from the dealer.
