Simply beautiful... I could look at those lines for hours... sigh...

If this car was a woman, my bachelorhood would be seriously threatened.

Beautiful. So, you got the Crater Lake plates. I got the retro Pacific Wonderland license; it looks good on my Sapphire Black Metallic. Looks like you might live in SE Portland. We're coming to the new BMW CCA Oregon Chapter rally at PIR 10 July; night you be there?

I am indeed in the SE. How do you know? I am not registered (yet) to the BMW CCA. I will look into it but honestly I might be travelling on July 10th so it will be a tough one for me to make it there.

Bmw cca

I guessed you were in the SE from the architecture of the homes. BMW CCA offers many advantages, including subscription to the Roundel (in which I publish occasional articles,) rebates on car purchases after a year (I just got a $500 check from BMW NA for buying my Z4) and some other info and offers about BMW. Now there is an active Oregon chapter.

Thank you all. I just need to get the clear bra on before I really make it my daily driver...

clear bra

Rafale and others: Is a clear bra worth it? We had one on our 01 525i ($500) and it seemed to look worse than a paint chip when a rock marred the plastic of the clear bra. We do intend to use our new Z4 as one of two daily drivers (the X3 will be for the worst winter weather, of which we don't have much here in Oregon,) but the front end of our black beauty does seem especially vulnerable on road trips we want to take. Should I get my dealer to put on the bra, or if not, who? Thanks.

+1 on whether or not the bra is a good idea--this is my dd for a 55 mile roundtrip to work! What a a reasonable price range to pay? thanks

I feel like the roads in Oregon are horribly dirty. The mix of letting people drive on the highway with studded tires and all these trucks transporting sand and rocks in open containers just fills the highways with rocks. It might look worse when the rock was large enough to get through the clear bra but at least it eliminates all the smaller chips and in the worst case you can always remove and change the bra when you think it has gotten too ugly.
Our cars are very low and I am expecting to get a lot of these rock chips. Driving in Oregon exposes our paint to sand blasting. I grew up in Europe and have never seen roads like this over there.
I would not get a clear bra on an X3 except maybe for the front painted bumper (they are painted only since MY 2006).
Around Portland, 503 motoring in Beaverton is being used by Kuni, and Sunset for Audi and Porsche. Dealers outsource the clear bra installations to specialized companies. They never really do it themselves. I have used them before and they have done an outstanding job on my 2002 330i a couple of years ago. They use 3M films. The darker the color of your car, the more visible the rock chips will be.
This time I am going to go to Clear Bra of Oregon because they have an extended hood kit which I feel can protect our long hood better. I found them on a Porsche forum and these guys use Ventureshield films which was taken over by 3M as well a couple of years ago. They can also custom cut parts which are not in a kit and I am considering doing the front part of the roof as well.
Overall I think it has a good return on investment potential at least around here.

I am planning to pretty much wrapping my whole car for less than $1000.
This would even include my interior brushed Aluminum trim and rear bumper top and maybe the roof.
You can usually find installers who will do your bumper and hood for about $600. The installation is key so you better shop around and find a reputable shop.

I have had the "clear bra" on 2 of my recent cars, a MINI and an 07 335i vert. In both cases the bra did its job as it kept the front end from getting nicks. However, no matter what folks say you can see it more on some colors than others. The edges tend to collect dirt and wax so that you will have to remove it whenever it is washed. In your case since your Z is a DD you might want to consider it but I would recommend you go check out some cars that have a clear bra to make sure you will be happy with the look. Perhaps the most important point is the installation. I would pay 25% more to ensure a quality install job. Tiny bubbles and wrinkles are common with some of the installers. This really ruins the whole job. Good luck.

clear bra

Thanks for your comments, everyone. I'll get a good one, well-installed. Rafale, what European country? Living in Romania 20 years ago, a Z4 wouldn't have made it 10 km due to the huge, deep potholes, and I was with one of our sons last month in Malaysia in his 1980 Porsche 911SC when we nearly damaged the undercarriage due to a big rock. That doesn't mean I don't agree that our roads in Oregon have too much grit and gravel. In Central Oregon it's terrible, with red volcanic gravel ODT uses to sand the roads.

Well, I grew up in France and Germany. Sorry, I have absolutely never seen highways with that many rocks and stones on the side before. You would be hard pressed to find rock chips on my dad's 7 year old 320d. Instead they get door dents and dings there ha.

Beautiful! I really do appreciate the clean lines of the car without the M package or the rear bumper of the 35is.

It could be the color rendering online, but the color looks real deep and rich when the skys are overcast. Very nice. The top-down pics in the partial sun (you can see some shadowing under the car) it looks to have hints of steel blue.

Your car looks fantastic!

I've been looking at your 13 pictures on flickr and haven't been able to get much else done this morning.

Hopefully in 16 days I'll be posting pictures of my new Z4.

I'm so excited!
