Extended Warranty

Hi all... I'll be taking delivery of my Z4 in a week or 2 and I'm wondering if the extended warranty (not extended maintenance plan) is worth it. I plan to use this car only in the summer time (so about 6 months of the year) and as such, my warranty will expire on time before I accumulate very many miles. I figure to drive about 7,000 per year so I'd have 42,000 when the warranty expires. At that little mileage, I wouldn't normally expect a lot of problems to show up.
What have been your experiences?

I don't know how much BMW charges for the extended warranty, however I think they'll let you extend it at anytime before the original warranty expires.
Typically I'm not one to buy extended plans but with my 1999 323i, I would have been way ahead had I had the extended plan.
If you know the price and coverage offered, please post it for me.

Thanks, and have fun with the car!

I found this on another thread and it's from Fall 2009, so it should be reasonably up to date.

Do you really plan on keeping your car this long? You are probably pretty safe for the first 6 years/80k miles. Like all insurances it is a little bit of a bet on luck. For me I would probably have sold mine before the car gets close having problems.

You can negotiate the price on these plans, shop around. I know I did and saved a bundle. Post on the "Ask a Dealer" forum.

I am having the same dilemna as I only drive about 6,500 miles per year. I have 12,500 miles as we speak. On top of that none of the warranties seem to match what I am seeking time/mileage wise. I have settled on the "Gold" warranty though. Let us know how you make out, good luck.

Thanks Morin, but it's not the cost, rather the concept of whether it's worthwhile for me

I plan to keep my Z for 7-10 years and didn't want to worry about having to replace the NAV unit or one of the motors powering the top. I know it's a gamble but like all "insurance", you buy it because you want the protection. I bought the Platinum 7/75 plan because I only drive my Z about 3-5K miles a year so I am getting 3 extra years of coverage.

Post 157 has everything you are looking for. You should also price some of the online aftermarket companies. I use warrantydirect.com for extended warranty on our Accord and Liberty and am very satisfied with them.
