Bike Rack for 2011 X5

Hello all. Pretty happy to finally own a BMW. Just picked mine up last week. 2011 X5. Sweet. My question, I recently put Yakima crossbars on the roof. Hoping to get the bike mount this week. The windnoise however is brutal up top. Dont know if its because of the large sunroof now or what. Tried moving the bars more in the back. Still once I hit around 70 mph the noise is bad. Has anyone had this problem, maybe recommend Thule or just another rack entirely? I'm only looking to carry 2 bikes. Thanks for your time.

I did the same thing but have a Thule rack.
Had the same wind noise problem.

Get the fairing for the front of the rack. Problem solved.
It won't completely eliminate the wind noise, but I'd say it 99% better.

In fact the RFT's make much more noise than the rack does with fairing.

Wind Noise

Thanks for the response. I really am trying to avoid the faring if I can. I'd hate to ruin the look of the car in order to acheive this.

How about a rear-mounted type like this:

To eliminate wind noise, purchase the BMW OEM cross bars and bike rack, they are much quieter than either Thule or Yakima. Trust me, I've tested all three at +100 MPH speeds.

Mount

Thanks all. I'm going to have to head into the dealer and check it all out what my options are. The crossbars on top of the roof are just not going to cut it. The noise is aweful, I really dont want the faring, looks worse. Gonna have to go for a hitch or check out that rear mount.

I have the rear mounted BMW OEM rack. Love it. No noise at high speeds.

I just mean it's the one that BMW makes. It screws into the holes in the bumper behind those circular punch outs. Very slick and high quality. Costs between $400 and $500.

Rack

I was looking at that one online. Is it made by Thule for BMW? Can you take it off the car pretty easily or is it something that once its screwed in you pretty much leave it in? Ideally I'd like to have the option. I think Mini Cooper has the same or similar set up. Is it pretty sturdy and can you lock the bikes to it? It was either that route for me or just getting a hitch installed and then going out and getting either a Thule or Yakima hitch mount. My dealer this morning said hitch's are on backorder for about a month now coming out of Germany. Insane.

I don't know who makes it for BMW - there was no indication that I remember seeing. It's very easy to attach to the car (although it helps if you have 2 people so you don't accidentally nick your bumper lining the screws up with the holes. Very easy to take off with only one person. Screws into the bumper very securely. Locks to the bumper. Can hold 2 bikes. You can lock bikes in place also. It is very sturdy and well made and no need for a trailer hitch.

Bike rack problem w/ 2011 x5

I just got a 2011 x5...my first BMW. Dealer was to install hitch for bike rack. I get a call and they say that the bumper is different so they don't have the piece that will make it look "pretty" after they cut the hole in the bumper. So they won't do it. I am not happy at all. What are the other options? I had the RX350 before and had a tailgate mounted rack for 2 bikes and threw the kids bikes in the back. was very much looking forward to having a hitch mount to get those bikes out of the car. What are your suggestions? Anyone else have this issue?

X5 Bike Rack

DO NOT GET A ROOF RACK FOR THE X5!!! DO NOT DO THIS! READ MY POSTS! I too recently came out of a Lexus RX330. I had a roof rack at the time and it was fine. When I got my 2011 X5 about 3 weeks ago I went out and bought the Yakima crossbars to fit on the side rails of the X5. The wind noise was unbearable. I mean so bad you wanted to get out of the car. I brought the bars back to the store. The reason is because of the xtra large sunroof on the X5. I didnt have this problem with the lexus because as you know the sunroof was 1/2 the size. A roof rack is a disaster on an X5, trust me. Even with the sunshade closed the noise was rediculous. Thule would have been the same.

I just had my local BMW dealership install a hitch yesterday on my new X5. Yes, the piece of moulding that goes around the bumper where they cut is not available yet but they said beginning of July they'll have it and install it. They asked me if they wanted me to do it. They didnt say they wouldnt do it because of how it looks. That should be your call. They only cut a small opening around my bottom bumper for the hitch to stick out a little. Even now it does not look that bad. The dealership had only 1 hitch available that just came in so I grabbed it rather than wait a month for ALL the hitches to come in. Definately go with a hitch mount however for the bike rack. I'm picking up a Yakima or Thule hitch mount bike rack today. Swings away from the car and everything is just clean and simple. Its a pain in the a** trying to step up to grab bikes off the roof anyway. X5 is much higher than the RX330 was. Good luck!

Thanks a lot for that advice. I looked at the bumper and it's very dark where the hold goes anyway. I don't know why they didn't just leave the hitch on. Maybe I'll see if Weatherford BMW will do it.

Cutting a hole in your otherwise nice and clean bumper does wonders for you at resale....... just sayin.

Not really

Not really. If anything by simply putting a hitch on the vehicle is adding to the value of the car. Once they put the moulding around where they cut this is a non issue. Whoever buys my car down the road will appreciate the fact that I have a hitch where others dont. I still cant understand why if your buying a $60k vehicle that competes with Land Rover, Land Cruiser, GX's etc, why they didnt have a hitch on it. Stupid.

Hitch

And your right, the bumper at the bottom is dark. My hitch looks like it came with car right out of South Carolina. Not a big deal. I didnt even know what my dealer was talking about when they called me. They said "we can put the hitch on now but you're not gonna have the moulding around the small cut out. You can wait until July when the cutout comes, or, we can do it now and then come back in July to finish the moulding, whatever you'd like to do." Not even an issue with them.

Not everyone will want a hitch for towing or for bikes. I have seen hundreds of X5s and I can surely say that less than 10 have a hitch. You are just limiting your potential buyers. Personally I wouldn't want a hitch, it looks foul on a sporty X5. Just saying what I am sayin.

To 428--you're zero help so no offense but this is probably not a thread that needs your input.
skibum1, thanks...I agree and Weatherford is going to call me back in a while

"mount them on the roof" is zero help.......

"this is probably not a thread that needs your input" are you the grand daddy of the x5 forum?

judging by the picture of you smoking, there is no issue with your cars having any type of accessory requiring physical activity. If I have a question about how to put a custom ashtray in my x5, you'll be my first source of info.

"judging by the picture of YOU smoking" LMFAO, can someone clue this clueless soul in?

You do know how to make a grand entrance by making rather offensive comments to other members, LMFAO again, a spring chick with 5 posts in thinks he/she owns the forum. Contribute something before you demand advice from others.

Get a clue. LOL.
