2011 X5 35i Base -- need rear view camera?

I want to have rear view camera on a new X5 base. However, I was told that's not possible at all. I must go up to Premium and then buy both tech and conv packages to get the rear view camera.

Am I the only one who feels frustrated over this? Who would drive such a big SUV without a rear view camera?

Millions of people drive an SUV every day without a rear view camera. I wonder how they managed in the '90's.

They either spend more time parallel parking, or they ding more bumpers. I remember my mom gently taping the car behind her 5 times while getting into a particularly small spot.

Sure, there are drivers who are experts at judging distances who don't need a camera... but for everybody else, cuts down on these incidents, and makes the process easier. They also used to manage without airbags, ABS, traction control, fuel injection, etc.

X5 is a big vehicle and I will use it to pick up and drop off my kids every day. Without a rear view cam, I don't feel safe backing into kindergarten parking lot, there are too many little kids around.

I feel BMW definitely drop the ball on this. This is such an important safety feature.

I guess it depends on your situation and where you live... I have probably parallel parked once in the last 3 years and I live in a very urban area, just not a lot of places that call for it.

Wilson I understand in your situation about having visibility with the kids it makes total sense in that respect.

I ordered 35i basic as well because of it's value proposition, and because I like the fact that it doesn't have roof rails. If they would have let me get the tech package with my Nav I probably would have gotten it, but not a big deal for me personally to live without the side and rear camera's.

It won't be a perfect fit for some, but works well for others. Guess you may have to fork over the extra cash for the premium.
