This is important: DOES YOUR MANUAL CONTAIN THE NOTICE THAT THIS IS NO LONGER STOCK FOR YOUR MODEL? Did you note anywhere that the cover was 'missing'?

If they failed to put this in the manual, they owe you the cover. While they reserve the right to change specifications at any time, they cannot do this 'retroactively' once you've taken possession of the car. They can make changes to the car up to the time they sell it, but those changes must be represented.

At least this has been my experience.

It is absolutely asinine that the car doesn't come with this anymore. $20K SUV's come with a cargo cover.

With that said, I have never used the cover in my SUV. I haul a lot of boxes, and that would require constantly removing the cover and putting it back in. I took mine out on day 1, and it hasn't gone back in the car since.

Also, for those who want to buy it, you can get it for $379 at Tischer BMW. They should really give 2011 X5 owner's a huge discount on it, though. Junkyards would also be a good option to search for one.

FYI guys, there's a few covers on ebay. There's 1 black, 2 gray and 1 tobacco - all for about $150 or less. All used, but they look good.

BMW's just crazy like that.

I can also confirm they did delete the 6 disc DVD from premium sound with no real notification. (And no price drop - still $1800)
Not that I'm missing it, its just the principle!
Yeh, but doesn't your car have a 20Gb hard drive instead with a MP3 player to replace that 6 disc changer ???
Your Sat Nav should be without disc as well, and use a "SD" card like your Digi Camera does.
My July 2009 (MY 2010) still had the disc changer DVD for the Nav, but I got the MP3 player, unfortuantely, not the 20Gb hard drive, but I use a USB stick with 4Gb (have a couple of them in them in the car)

Does the Cargo Cover show in the manual? Can someone who has an '11 35i without the cover confirm that? Maybe they changed the manual to make a note of it.

I'm looking at my brand spanking new owner's manual right now and it talks about the cargo cover and operation of it on page 131. There is NO asterisk by the section as there is for every other section addressing an optional package/component. Further, I got NO insert/flyer etc. regarding the discontinuation of the cargo cover. Nothing. Nada. Nil.

It's worth a try, as it's a good logical argument.

But my manual on page 5 under "Editorial Notice" has a paragraph that ends with "it is possible that the feature described in this manual could differ from those on your vehicle."

I suspect the lawyers got that "catch all" into the manual to cover situations such as eliminating features such as a cargo cover.

UPDATE: After reading this thread, I've reached out to my CA, and had him reach out to the BMW NA to get this clarified. The answer he got back from corporate is that it is ONLY 3.5i which do not come with the cover by default. The 3.5d and 5.0 still come with the cover included for free.

Now, for those who are unlucky to get 3.5i without the cover, circlebmw.com (out of NJ) sell them for around $380 + s/h. Dont pay retail !

First of all the dealer should at least sell them at cost to those that were not told by their CA. I understand it is not the dealers fault but it sure is a good opportunity for them to play the hero for the few out there. Like the cover at cost about ($275.00) and the dealer take $100.00 off the car to $175.00. Be a HERO

I took delivery of my 2011 5.0 on Monday in PDC (which included the cover). I've noticed the other two 3.5d scheduled for delivery had the cargo cover also......!

No cover in 35I Premium

I took delivery of Premium last Friday. With a book there was a note (1 page) telling that
despite description of the cover in the book, the cover is not a standard on 35I period!!!

It's just the 3.5i's that have had the cargo cover deleted. I feel sorry for the dealers having to explain this to customers. When I picked up my diesel last week he briefly mentioned the issue. I think they were blindsided by the change and are caught in the middle.

+1 - Jeff and I's X5D's (the white and black ones parked in front) both had them Donnie was explaining that they were blind sided by the issue as well - several customers noticed and they robbed other vehicles before they realized that BMW discontinued them in the 35i..

As posted previously, I got a free one from my CA this weekend . It certainly demonstrates that it pays to , and show that you are , if you know what I mean.

Mine was there at delivery because the 35d's are still standard as I still believe all models should be. To tell the truth if they were not standard on the model I chose I I don't think I would rush out and pay the $500.00 for something I would probably hardly use. I like having it but really don't see it being something that I can say "man, I'm glad I have that thing", I don't know maybe later down the line I will find some use for it.

Yep, picked up my 35D this weekend it came as standard. But I do have to say it is pretty important to have to give the extra privacy. And I can think of it been very useful with groceries when you don't want the excessive sun light exposure.

No arguments here but with the rear glass tinted and the fact that it cuts your storage height in half will usually leave it in the retracted position 99% of the time, for me anyways.

cargo cover

I believe as of Mid June this year they have discontinued the cargo cover as standard equipment. But it appears it can be ordered separately. Unfortunately I do not know any more than that.

I use the thing all of the time - it keeps prying eyes out and makes the back end look more finished instead of a big hole. Super nice while traveling too, as our luggage fit perfectly underneath it. It does also keep it a little cooler as someone else mentioned.

I agree I think I would also use it quite often. The thing is, without that I don't have any private storage in the vehicle bigger than a shoebox. Many times for example I'm coming home from work and have my laptop with me and need to stop off at the grocery store or somewhere. If I can't put it in the cargo area and cover it, where else am I going to find a spot? Maybe it will fit under a seat but not likely and you still have to make sure no edges are sticking out / visible.

This seems like a pretty essential part of a vehicle that any major manufacturer should/would include.

When I took delivery of my 35d at the PCD, when the woman was demoing the cargo cover I was just half listing because I intended to take it out as soon as I got home just as I had with my E53. I found the '11 cargo cover to be MUCH better designed than the E53's. It looks better, it operates better, it removes easier, and there's someplace to put it if you have to take it down (ie, put up the 3rd row seats -- or perhaps haul a boatload of mulch).

All of our luggage fit nicely under it for our trip home (it had to be puzzle-fit exactly one way in order to fit under the cover though, so no valets loadin' the car ).

I think I'll keep this one in the car; not that anyone would really want to look at the cr*p I usually keep in the back of the car, but it looks better when *I* walk by.

Are we sure they are still 'standard' on the 35d? I've ordered a 35d and my CA called to say it had been dropped. THis was early on after I had ordered the vehicle... Got the call last night to say it had arrived. Will try to pick up this afternoon and will post if it came with...

Last week mine came with one at the Performance Center. The only model it was dropped from was the 35i. The 35d and 50i still come with it.

Not until I saw the disclaimer on a piece of paper did I bothered to look and realize it's not there! Absolutely insane, I didn't see that as an option either, and to rub it in more, my X3 had that, comes standard!

This is a poor dealer trying to get more profit from you. I ordered my X5 and it came with cargo cover. Shame on the dealer. You shold post their name and the salesman's name so people know to stay away from the dealership.
