Talking F10 535i Delivered - Photos and Impressions

Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about. In my driveway!

My first impression upon seeing my car at the dealership was that it was black instead of gray. Sophisto Gray is dark, especially on a cloudy day or in the evening, and I really like it. Outstanding detail on the headlamps and dual exhaust. With the sport package, the proportions are perfect -- the car's a beast.

The Oyster/Black/Anthracite interior is very classy and comfortable. My wife thought the overall look and feel was like "sipping on a great cup of coffee." The layout of the controls, idrive, indicators and are intuitive and convenient.

I was surprised at how large and roomy the interior is. The huge moon roof really gives the car an open feeling. Plenty of leg and shoulder room in front and back. I'm 6'2" and sometimes feel kind of jammed into my E39. I feel very comfortable and sit much more upright with plenty of headroom in the F10. Visibility is excellent. My dealer posed the question, "Why would anyone buy a 7 series?"

Now the drive. Smooth as silk. Serene and composed. It's very easy to not notice the 8-speed auto transmission change gears when accelerating. It takes off like a coiled spring with surprisingly strong torque and zip. Very strong from a stand-still and lots of pop at 80 or 100 mph. The handling is exceptionally well balanced; the impact of the wide track and long wheelbase is obvious to the driver. It gives the sense of being crouched low, hugging the road. It really puts a grin on your face. I drove around all afternoon thinking about the line from the movie Office Space, "I did absolutely nothing all day, and it was everything I thought it would be..." I'm very happy with the 535i.

Now for some comments on the options.
  • Sport - love the look. Multi-contour seats significantly better than standard.
  • Dynamic Handling - Clever feature I viewed as a must-have to tune your driving experience to the road, your mood, the type of trip, fellow passenger preferences, etc. I see myself using this a lot. It's fun.
  • Premium and Premium 2 - Navigation screen is spectacular, deep/clear audio.
  • Driver Assistance - Was a little unsure when I ordered but very much like it so far. The lane departure, blind spot detection and auto high beams are excellent. I'll post an update once I test out the park assist. This is $1750 well spent.
  • Cold Weather - No brainer for Northern climate.
  • Convenience - OK, I probably went overboard on this. Power tailgate and soft close doors are marginally useful features but keyless entry is cool. Probably not worth $1700 but what the hell.
My overall thought is "What a great car!" Great job BMW! Enjoy the photos and post any questions you may have. I'll post more after I've had some more time in the saddle.

Model/Options: 535i Sophisto, Oyster/Black, Anthracite, ZCV, ZCW, ZDA, ZDH, ZP2, ZPP, ZSP, 2TB

Your car looks amazing! Congrats! Those wheels are probably one of the best looking for the F10. How did you get your car so soon? I thought the release date for the F10 is June 19th?

Is there a way to turn off the lane departure warning system and the active blind spot detection? Do you know of the new features for the 2011 iDrive, like being able to read text message on the iDrive screen? Thanks for the pics!

Amazing looking car! Very classy!

The price sticker seems more/as expensive than the similarly equipped 550?

Congrats on the new car. It is very sharp! I hope the dealer gave you a deal where you did not end up paying that high MSRP!

I guess the release date is urban legend. When I ordered my car on April 2, the dealer said I'd get it late May / early June. Got it June 4. Not sure where the June 19 date came from.

You can turn the lane departure and blind spot warnings on and off with buttons to the left of the steering wheel. I have not yet investigated all of the new idrive features yet. There's enough here to learn that the "Video Professor" could publish a new course.

Here are some photos in the noon sun. You can get a sense of the depth of the Dark Graphite / Sophisto Gray. Enjoy.

Sophisto vs anthracite vs dark graphite metallic

Truly beautiful!!! Am wondering about the difference, if any, between these colors. You listed yours as Sophisto (seen other pictures from this site of F10s in Sophisto) but you also indicated Anthracite. While building my own in bmwusa.com, there was no option for a Sophisto or Anthracite. The closest one I can find is called Dark Graphite Metalic. Are they all one and the same color?

Congrats again on your new car!!!

congrats--beautiful looking car!

i know it's grey, but it looks a lot like my e39's black sapphire metallic (in both the overcast and direct sunlight--at least with these pics).

the interior color combo is also very, very nice. do you have children at home, and if so, may i inquire as to their ages?

Thanks. Sorry, Sophisto = Dark Graphite Metallic. Sophisto is the name of the color in Europe. I've been tracking the European launch and the name just stuck in my mind. Not sure why they changed it since it's a good name. Anthracite is the interior trim option. Sorry for not being more clear.

Thanks. Good question - high school and college. I'd never even think about this combo with little crum grabbers running around. That's why I've had black or gray interiors for the last 12 years.

Interior at Night - Nav

Here are some attempts of the interior at night. Hope these help -- very tough to capture the overall look of the cabin at night. The photos are at high ISO (grainy) and heavily cropped. One nice touch: BMW placed LEDs along the lower edge of the aluminum trim on all of the doors and in the door handle wells.

I keep flip flopping between cinnamon and oyster, currently leaning towards oyster which my wife doesn't like. My kids are in the exact same age group but my wife reminded me that we often have my 80 yr old mother with us. I can't win...
