'01 M5 running problem

My brother recently purchased an '01 M5 with 96k on the odometer. In the last 6 weeks, it has developed a condition where the engine cuts out when the fuel level drops to 1/4 tank or lower. When the tank is higher than that, there is no problem.

Initially, it triggered a Service Engine Soon light that indicated MAF sensor failure. First the right bank, then the left bank. Those were replaced along with the fuel filter. The SES light no longer comes on, but the stalling persists.

Otherwise, the car runs amazingly well...

Anyone experience anything like this? Maybe have some suggestions as to a fix?

have you and your brother pulled the sendining unit to make sure the fuel pump is sitting in its correct position
