[QUOTE=shahm05;5355572They said that my bumper needs to be replaced without even looking touching my car. The service specialist told me it would cost $928!!!![/QUOTE]

Let me break it down for you, they take your car and the $928, fixes the bad $1.50 tabs, have you wait a few days so that you think the work and new the bumper is worth the money, you go back to pick up the same car with the same bumper but with new tabs.

Go get another quote at a different dealer. Correction, go to a body shop.

What a joke.

They could have 100 complaints- AND could have a redesign of the mold to correct the "issue" and they would still say "never heard of this"...

Anyone that thinks they are getting accurate and truthful information from ANY manufacturers customer service function is dreaming.

It seems they respond most quickly to 'risk based' situations: lawsuits, lemon claims, regulatory threats...

I have never had any issue with the bumper on my 2010 X5 48i (production end of November). Furthermore the rear bumper was significantly damaged due to a minor rear end collision, and though it bent the bumper on the bottom nearer to the exhaust, there was no mounting issues, I could tell. Though they basically replaced all of the mountings for the bumper, I am not sure which were broken though, (the entire repair came to other 8k, due to a replacement of muffler, heat shield, PDC sensor's, and a slight adjustment of the rear quater panel, that resulted in removal of headliner, and a lot of labor cost. The other drivers insurance paid, but gave a Mazda6 for a rental). So I am not sure what the problem is, I would assume there is a genuine issue due to a few reports, but it would not seem it affects all vehicles produced in MY2010, or the late 2009 production models.

Damn, I think I'm joining the ranks of unlucky X5 owners, as my bumper rubs against the tailgate again! And it doesn't look like any clips are broken or anything that would suggest a hit from behind or garage valet foulplay. I'll probably take off he bumper myself on a weekend to check it out, but in any case I start believing it is a design flaw.

2010 X5 Rear Bumper Quality Issues

I am having the same problem with the rear bumper popping up and rubbing the lower tailgate. Have seen several on the road with the same problem. Canned response from the dealer -- someone hit me -- NOT! Ridiculous!!

When I took delivery of my X5 35i last month (August build), I noted that the same kind of problem -- the passenger's side of the rear bumper was asymmetric with respect to the tailgate above, and 2 of the bumper tabs were out of the clips. The sales and service managers both looked at it and said they had never seen this problem before. I told them I would not accept the vehicle until they corrected this defect.

Well, it took their body shop less than 15 minutes to pull off the bumper and re-install it with all the tabs in their clips. Once this was done, it looked perfect, and the dealer entered this problem into my vehicle history in their database. They assured me that if the bumper tabs popped out again on their own (and there were no scratches, scrapes or other evidence of an accident), they would take care of it under warranty.

So I took delivery in mid-August and so far, the bumper tabs have remained in their clips and the X5 has been otherwise flawless.

Hard to know whether this bumper issue is a design defect, poor installation quality control or a combination of both. Regardless, it appears to be a frequent enough problem, that they will need to address it at some point.

Suggestion: look for vehicles on the dealer lot with same issue, then point them out.

Did not have this issue with my 2007 X5 and it had been bumped several times. I believe the cause is defective clips, particularly since I have seen this on several other X5's and the most recent still had window stickers on it.

Last night I was driving home and there were two 3.0's driving right next to me. Both had the bumper issue described in this thread. 100% manu defect. The bumper was sort of sticking up, touching the bottom tailgate in the exact same spot..... no chance both cars got hit and had the same exact damage.

Last time mine popped out I was just leaning on the bumper to load something into the back. They just keep saying the same thing "you must have been hit". I have been driving for 20+ years with no issues but according to them I have been hit 3 times since November 6th. It is a bunch of BS.

Well, reporting the issue to BMW this morning fell on deaf ears. "I'll put this information in the computer and corporate will see it. We stand by the dealer's technician's decision." Guess what, their parts department manager doesn't agree with them either!

Here's a though.

People should start posting pictures of this defect here. Date and location. BMW will start having issues with 20-50 separate examples .... as opposed to "oh, we've never seen it"

Doesn't have to be your car either, doesn't have to be fixed by bmw.

Ironically a couple of months after posting that mine had not been afflicted with this, I noticed my bumper had popped to.

Guess that's karma for you.

However during yesterdays routine maintenance, I simply mentioned to my SA that the clips had come undone and that I had read about it multiple times on the various forums. He had a look at it so he could properly explain it to the techs and they fixed it no questions asked (no accidents and zero marks on the bumper).

Apparently, it's quite the pita to fix as they have to remove the entire bumper.

I have to say Calgary BMW is hands down the best dealership that I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with!

The service we get from them embarasses what goes on next door at both Lexus and Mercedes (Do NOT deal with Lonestar or Hyatt MB in Calgary....scam artists extraordinaires!!).

Hello i been working on cars for about 48 years and what you are describing it is either a poor quality control at the factory with defective retainers or sometimes they break real easy with just a litle bump without seeing the car it is really hard to know what the problem really is but if i was you i would contact the factory rep and tell them about all of the cars you have seing with the same problem because the dealership is not going to do nothing about it and sometimes they charge you and collect again from the factory rep i hope you get your problem taking care your last alternative it is to call consumers affairs

Unhappy x5 bumper

I have a 2010 x5 and have experienced exactly the same problem with the rear bumper. The clips that hold it on seem to break without any apparent impact and then the bumper cover (part alone in uk is 500) snags the lower tailgate. So far no joy from the dealership but this has to be a bmw fault.

Are BMW seriously asking us to believe that there has been an international outbreak of mysterious impacts that leave no damage asside from a loose bumper cover. Bit of an insult to the intelligence really.

Also told that fault must be from an impact yet there is no visible damage on the bumper.

Anybody got any suggestions as to how owners may get satisfaction?

First time beemer owner and not impressed.

Same thing happened to ours

2010 X5 35D, late oct. nov build. Our bumper looked exactly the same as the picture earlier, with a bubble popping up in the middle. I just pushed it down and it snapped back into place. It has happened twice so far since we took delivery. There's no visible evidence that the bumper has been hit by anything.

I have a 2006 BMW X5 with a metallic black paint. I discovered a huge gash on the rear bumper and the driver side seems to come off the sockets. Looks like someone backed into it while parked at the mall. Would you recommend replacing it or fixing it? How much would it cost to repair either way. I would appreciate it very much with your feedback. Thank you!

wife backed into a parked van (with many dents and dings) and the left rear black plastic piece popped out. Luckily, my neighbor owns an autobody and a case of beer took care of the cost! Now I have to fix the right side from going over a two foot hight snow bank this winter getting into my driveway. I think I will be owing my neighbor another case of beer

Have a 4 month old X5 5.0 M Package and noticed the same issue on the rear bumper. NO scratches or nicks but when the car was taken to two different dealers they both tried to claim the bumper had been hit and wanted $1500 to fix it. Same broken clip issue. How do we get this recall going!!!!

Same wrinkling on 2011 X5 Mpackage

Just purchase ( Nov 2010) an X5 5.0 M package and noticed the wrinkle on the top part of the bumper. Two separate dealers here in Florida came up with the standard BS story that someone must have banged it, although no indication of impact is visible, and quoted me $1500 US for a new bumper.
What to do?

You can add me to the list. I picked up a CPO X5 about a month ago and noticed the gap between bumper and body. Just got the truck back from the service center, and they replaced the whole rear bumper as the dealership acknowledged that it should have been fixed before delivery.
