Powertrain whining noise

My 2010 750Li ran silently when new, but developed an ugly whining noise after about 4,000 miles. The noise correlates with RPM and is most noticeable when pulling away from a stop or when accelerating from a low speed. I took the car to my dealer, where the service manager agreed the problem existed. A week later, I was told that they had two more 2010 750s with similar mileage and the same problem. The dealer talked to BMW, and I was then told that the whining noise is caused by a defective oil pump. Initially I was told that BMW was redesigning the pump. Now I have just been told that the redsign has been completed and my new pump has been released by BMW in Germany and is on its way to my dealer.

My 2010 750i does the same thing. Only from a dead stop, or during a slow acceleration. It is a high pitch whine (but oddly not obtrusive). My dealer told me it was the twin turbo system, when I inquired about it about 1.5 months ago. Maybe they were just told by BMW to say it was the twin turbos, when really they are having an oil pump issue.

Do you know if the oil pumps needs to be replaced, if there is a slight whine? Will it just crap out? Going on 3.5 months with my car, and so far it has been the most reliable BMW I have ever owned!!

Spoke with my SA today, and he said there is no official Service Bulletin, or even a note about the oil pump making a whine noise. He said it might be a case to case thing. Also, nothing in the system about the 2009-2011 7 Series needing, or getting a re-designed oil pump. Hmmmmm....

New Ol Pump Part Number

I asked the service manager at my BMW dealer for the parts number of the redesigned oil pump, as requested by Deutsch100. He said that it is not yet in the parts catalog. He said that the replacement pump that I am getting has been "released by Germany" at the specific request of "the engineers at BMW North America" with whom the service manager has been working on the whining noise problem that I brought to his attention several weeks ago. He recommended that anyone experiencing this problem talk to their service manager who should talk to "his friends at BMW" to achieve the same solution.

He also told me that my new oil pump has just arrived from Germany, and it will be installed on June 22. I will update this post when that's been done.

Mine developed the same noise at around 1600 miles and it has steadily increased in volume. I have 2900 miles now.

That's so odd, and I think not a coincidence! My whine developed around 1800 miles, and has also steadily increased in volume. I now have almost 3000 miles as well. I'm thinking this is not a "case by case" situation, as my dealership told me.

My car is running beautifully, and I hate to take it in, for what is seemingly just a slightly annoying noise.

JoeJensen...maybe our whines have steadily increased, due to the fact we are more aware of it now, and know that others have the same issue/problem/situation! Are we focusing on the noise, imagining it increasing??

My car has 10,000+ miles. I can assure you that with increasing mileage the noise will only get worse.

Disaster Strikes

So on June 22 my 7 went into the shop to have the oil pump replaced by the redesigned pump which had arrived from Germany. However while removing the old pump a crank shaft sprocket broke ("it was cracked -- just as well it broke now while your car is in the shop") and a replacement has to come from Germany ... which will take "five to seven days because it has to be cleared by US customs."

I will update this post when the job is finally completed.

Many of us have same problem, is this a formal recall or a service advisory? When your job is complete, would you be able to post your service invoice (BMW job description, part numbers, etc...) so that I can bring this info to my service center for same service? Thanks!

As I understand it, there is neither a recall nor a service advisory: see my post at 06-16-2010 (above) formy dealer's advice on how to get your dealer to address the problem.

I will be sure to post the info you request as soon as I get my car back.

New Ooi Pump Installed

I finally got my car back today with the redesigned oil pump installed. The part number on the invoice is as follows: "1 11-41-7-612-772 OIL PUMP: 114020". However I guess it's possible that this is just the part number of the original oil pump, since I was previously told that the new one is "not yet in the parts catalog."

The whining noise has now disappeared completely, and the car is as smooth and silent as it was when I bought it. Absolutely, totally silent. This proves that the whining noise was caused by the defective (original equipment) oil pump.

However it does not of course prove that the redesigned oil pump will not develop the same problem as the original, since (in my case at least) the noise emerged after a few thousand miles. Only time will tell.

Curious if anyone else had oil pump replaced .... Is going to service advisor with my Whiny 2009 750i and dfochil's part number enough to have them replace part under warranty -- In other words, is this "spoon feeding" technique advisable?

Not sure how i missed this thread back in june, guess it was honeymoon time for me. But I have been noticing a whining noise in my car for the last two months and was wondering if maybe I never heard it before and it was always there.
I was not looking forward to going to the dealer with this, but after reading this i feel better knowing its real. I have 6500 miles and it sounds like an electric golf cart on launch. So i guess its time for those funny looks when I explain this to my SA. God bless message boards!

rsingh111...So did your dealer confirm this as the issue? They agreed, and have documentation of this issue? I asked again last week at my dealer, and they said they have NO IDEA about this "problem" and no other complaints fron new 7er owners. The whine noise is driving me crazy as well. Luckily, it only does it from like 0-20/30 mph and then it is totally gone. But from every gentle acceleration, I feel like I am driving my gramma's golf cart. It sounds horrible!

Sorry hit send by accident
So dfochil gave me his SA name and I had mine talk to him and appeared to be the same issue that I have been complaining about. So he had a factory rep test it and all agree noise is there but feel it is endemic to the car. BMW rep feels oil pump change would not fix it but did ok a new pump. My SA did order a new pump but later found out that he ordered the same one as the one it has now. BMW factory rep gave him a different one to get from Germany. So something sounds fishy to me. They may not want to a wholesale recall on this issue. I have reported this for almost 9 months and hope this will go away

I had mine replaced about 3000 miles ago and it completely fixed the whining noise. The bad news is it has started coming back just like before.

Rdk. Did they give you the redesigned oil pump or replace it with a similar one. That may be why it has come back

Bad news for me they sent the old pump. Now have to wait. Been dealing with this for 9 months. Almost 1/3 of my lease

Do you notice this whining noise never happens when the engine/oil is cold! Each morning, upon the first start up I listen for the whining noise...and it is never there. The car sounds awesome accelerating! Once the engine and oil are up to operating temps, the whining noise starts. I called my dealer again, and they are still saying the noise is normal. I know it is because I am more aware & even listening for the whining...but it is driving me frickin' nuts. It sounds awful doing a normal or slow acceleration. It does not even sound like a twin turbo BMW V8 engine. Just whines and sounds pathetic!

I agree not noticeable when cold. They say it is endemic to this car and twin turbo. I am seeing some posts about this in x50 also.

I was told it was the new one, but I am going to ask for a confirmation.

Same whining problem here!

I'm having the same whining problem with my '11 X5 50i.

Some patterns I've noticed:
-Doesn't happen when the engine is cold
-Doesn't happen until I really push the engine and then it won't stop for the rest of the day, even if I'm driving slow
-Whine is noticeable after 2k rpm
-Not noticeable at higher speeds because of noise
-Seems to come from the right side (glove box)
-The whine is dependent on engine speed

I have an appointment to have it checked out next tuesday. I will tell them that it might be the oil pump.

Is there any chance that they might tell me it's the turbo?
