Not certain if I have it, but all the same, that's what warranty is for.

Once the car is at operating temperature, idling in park raise the rpms to 1700 rpms and continue to bounce the rpms between 1700 and 2000 rpms. I found that to be the sweet spot and that's what I did with the foreman in the car with me and he noticed the sound immediately.

Don't take any sh*t from the dealer, shut them up and make them look up the PUMA case.

The redesigned oil pump part # is 11417643256. See my repair order in my previous post.

I picked up my car on Friday and the car is to9tally quiet now. No noise and it even seems smoother during acceleration. Very pleased.....

Exactly the way it should be.

By the way, if you go to a quiet place or garage with no other sounds, turn heating/AC off and go to around 2000 rpms and if you reaaally want to hear it, you will still hear the oil pump but only at those rpms and it will be very quiet : D

Oil pump whine 2010 750I

Same issue here. Here is a list of comments and responses by 2 technicians and 1 forman with from 2 dealerships with regard to the electric golf cart type whining noise emanating from under the hood:
1. "Its normal"
2. "Its a BMW- these cars are meant to be heard"
3. The F-01 engine is much louder than your older 2002 7 Series"
4. At my suggestion that Bimmerfest posts all pointing to the Oli Pump- "No way- Oil pumps dont sound that way; its more of a thumping sound when that pump goes."
5. "Not reproducible."
6"Turn up the radio"
7. "take the car out of Sport Mode."
The good news- 3rd dealership Forman rode with me and immediately agreed that the nosie was not normal and that it may be a bearing. Bottom line: 2 weeks in the shop for the dealership to provide to BMW justification through many additional required tests to prove that Oil Pumo was bad- They replaced it under warranty. The car purrs as it should now. Very pleased with the high level of service here...

By the way- the sound is exaggerated in Sport Mode- thats where I got this Forman to agree.
First dealership ride with resulted in me being told to "take it out of Sport Mode and then " see it disappears."

Good Luck

Re: Powertrain whining noise

Going in tomorrow finally for this!

Will have tech ride with me and show him EXACTLY what it is! Prepared to get Manager involved before I leave if they give me any run around, which I'm not anticipating do to our history.
Will also be showing them the "clicking/popping sound" in steering column which I detailed in my thread in this forum
I understand it may in fact be part of the Sport pkg and Active suspension.

Only 4K miles????

I'd be a tad disappointed to say the least.
My dealer has opened a puma case and new revised pump is in route...

Actually just got a call to come by and go for a test drive so I can describe the whining noise, they also mentioned that I could drive all the new ones on the lot that they will sound the same lol, very interestingly to say the least. On my way there as we speak .

Success!!!

Oil pump has been replaced and the whine is gone!

Took a lot of time and some help from fellow 'Festers'.

Glad it's really fixed.

Thanks,
Harry

Question,

Which motor does the oil pump issue affect? The 750 or 740?

Thanks!

It affects the 8-cylinder N63 engine in the 750 models.

Have not read anything where it affects the 6-cylinder 740 engines or the Alpina modified 8-cylinder engines.

I just bought a 2009 750Li Cert Pre-Owned and by the time I got home I heard "the noise" I dropped it off at the dealer yesterday and today I'm being told that they are replacing the belts which will take care of the problem. I challenged my SA to a $1 that it was the oil pump. Let's see what happens when I pick up the car tomorrow. In the meantime many thanks for this post.

I brought the car in for this noise. They found the power steering to be faulty and claims it's a big job so I had to reschedule.

Has anyone thought it was the oil pump, but later found out it was the power steering pump?

Mine when in for the pump noise and end up getting a steering rack replaced and noise is gone, prepare to wait almost two months on that part

Just had my Oil Pump replaced part no. 11-41-7-612-772

The noise is gone but I heard this part no. IS NOT the redesigned part number... so should I expect the noise to come back? Did you guys had the noise come back?

I have a 2010 750i CPO with 53k miles. told the dealer about whining noise, they have had car for 12 days, kuni bmw portland sa Chris says power steering pump has been replaced, I will pick up car tomorrow and report results.

service manager was skeptical, I suspect anti bimmerfest, wanted it to be low power steering fluid, we will see.

Resurrecting this thread with an added bit of info. Took my 09 750Li in for 50K service today and asked for a ride with the shop foreman. Pointed out the characteristic whine 1500 - 2500 RPMs. No other questions asked, he knew of the issue and said he would get the parts ordered to replace the oil pump but it might take a few weeks to get paperwork done and the part from Germany.

Called back later in the day and said they have one in the US which will arrive tomorrow, keep the loaner and they will have it done by the end of the day.

So it would appear that this issue is getting more attention if the paperwork can happen that quickly (he didn't mention the PUMA case) and dealers in the states are now carrying the new pump in stock.
