2009 X5 vs 2011 X5

Hi,

I am debating whether to get a used 2009 X5 30i or new 2011 X5 35i. The used 2009 X5 has 9K miles and fully loaded with Premium, Tech, 3rd row and Comfort access and is priced for $47K while the new 2011 X5 is close to $60K.

The 2011 35i also seems to have better mileage. Which one do you think makes more sense and has better value. I am leaning towords 2011 model but would like to hear from the experts.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I await the experts as well but in the mean time:

While 13K is a lot of moola, two additional years of warranty and 'free' maintainence is worth a few bucks on the 2011 and should be factored in.

Just the fact of seeing a newer model on the road would just kill me. The 11 also has a better engine, transmission, and updated features. If that doesn't bother you get the 09, since it's almost new and fully loaded.

Thanks for your prompt responses.

I hope to negotiate on the 2011 X5 35i model for ~$55k and the price difference would be only 8K. Can you share how much you are paying for this model? I am looking for following packages
35i Premium, Tech, Comfort access, running boards and convenience package. Can you also share your negotiating experience at the dealer?

thanks

The X5 markup is about $5K and, although I would not classify myself as an expert, you could reasonably figure 1-2K over invoice as the price you will pay. BTW, I just went through this in ordering my 2011 X5 35d. And who says you cannot negotiate on the "used vehicle?" The want 47K; offer 43 or less. The bigger question is how long will you keep the vehicle...till the wheels fall off? Then I recommend to go with the vehicle that is easier for you to deal with economically. If you're planning to trade in 3-5 years, go for the 2011 since it will be more valuable on the trade in.

Dr. Mike - Thanks for the advice. I negotiated on the used 2009 X5 for $47k and that is the best price the dealer offered and won't go below that. It has Premium, Tech, Comfort access, 3rd row and ~9K miles.

I have many questions myself buying another ride and therefore I am not even close to an expert.

Dr Mike got a point there. How long are you going to keep it for. If you keep it lets say 2 years or so you should ask yourself what's the 2009 worth after this period and add up the extra expenses ( no free maint.) Now take a new one, estimate what it would be worth after the same period and figure out the difference. Add a bit more finance expenses and now you (roughly) know how much more it would be driving a new one. I made a little spreadsheet myself comparing used to new and it did surprise me how small the difference is. ( I do over analyze stuff sometimes).

Just my $0,02 and correct me if I am wrong.

I would go new since the difference is the 8 spd tranny and with those options on the '09 about an MSRP of 59500 or so, I think you could get the X% new for about 10K more. My diesel with premium, sport, techno. packages and contour seats price out at 60K before the credits.

FWIW, 2009 also has the older iDrive as opposed to the newer iDrive with better graphics, easier user interface and is hard drive based for speed. It was 2010 or up for me (when the newer iDrive was available) and since the price difference was not astronomical, I went with a 2011 and glad I did so. I also didn't want to see a 2011 on the road and regret not getting it. Since I have been driving a 2011 for about three weeks now, I haven't seen another 2011 on the road
