Finally the wait is over

we just picked up our new 2011 X5 35d yesterday. The car is everything I hoped it would be and more. We ordered back at the end of March and it took nearly 3 months to get here, but now I can say that wait was worth it. One curious item to mention. We opted against the running boards cause they were so small, but the standard side sills stick out quite a bit. Now, we are thinking maybe the running boards are a good idea after all. I assume they can be retrofitted by the dealer.

Any thoughts?

First of all That's a good looking X5, now about those running boards if I were you I would go back to the dealer and check out one with them on a demo. They look good but are really not functional except as a guard against road spray. The logical thing would be to pass but if you like the way they look, well.....

I have the running boards and it was totally an athestic choice. They are totally useless and scuff the bottom of your pants upon exit but i think they complete the look

Yes, I think they can be retrofitted on later, I have a 3 month old and I have no need for them. My CA told me it was an option to retrofit it later.

I think the retrofit is about 600 to 700 dollars total. So not bad. I think it helps the looks but if you don't know about them it is no big deal. What color did you go with (outside and inside).

Titanium Silver Metallic with Black Perforated leather. I think they look good as well, but our concern was they were way small. Plus, I wasn't sure if you could even use it as a step. I guess we will see how it goes.

IMO, save your money.

We borrowed a demo car from the dealer (2011 with 50 miles on the odo ) for several days a couple of months ago before we ordered our car. The demo had the running boards and I recall them being a bit awkward to step over and too high to bother stepping on. They were purely cosmetic otherwise.

We ordered and received our new car without them and I don't miss them at all.

Visually, I think they look better on lighter colors (white/titanium...) so it's up to you if you think they would visually complete your look.
